À propos de cet audio

In this much-anticipated final installment in the Stoic Virtues series, Ryan Holiday makes the case for the virtue on which all other virtues depend.

Of all the stoic virtues - courage, discipline, justice, and wisdom - wisdom is the most elusive. This is especially apparent in an age where reaction and idle chatter are rewarded, and restraint and thoughtfulness are unfashionable. The great statesman and philosophers of the past would not be fooled, as we are, by headlines or appearances or the primal pull of tribalism. They knew too much of history, of their own flaws, of the need for collaboration to do any of that. That's wisdom - and we need it more than ever.

Wisdom is Ryan Holiday's guiding principle, and Wisdom Takes Work is the culmination of all his work. Drawing on fascinating stories of the ancient and modern figures alike, Holiday shows how to cultivate wisdom through reading, self-education, and experience. Through the lives of Montaigne, Seneca, Joan Didion, Abraham Lincoln, and others, Holiday teaches us how to listen more than we talk, to think with nuance, to ruthlessly question our own beliefs, and to develop a method of self-education. He argues convincingly for the necessity of mental struggle and warns against taking shortcuts that deprive us of real knowledge. And he shows us how dangerous power and intelligence can be without the tempering influence of wisdom.

An absence of curiosity and prudence is a catastrophe for all of us, argues Ryan Holiday. This incredibly timely book both diagnoses the greatest problem of our current moment and offers solutions for the way forward. Wisdom is work - but it's worth it.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“A deeply thoughtful yet entertainingly readable description of the journey to wisdom by a modern age philosopher. I wish Ryan Holiday had written it, and I’d read it, when I was twenty. Now I hope everyone does.” —General Stanley McChrystal, retired US Army and author of On Character

Huge fan of Ryan Holiday, Read all the books. Saw him live in Toronto, flew to Austin the next day.
My review focusses on the apparent villain in this book. I wonder if someone hears the name Elon Musk in 50 years from now, if they’ll have the same view as the current headlines about him in 2025.
I haven’t done the research, however, I can imagine that Edison, Tesla, Churchill, Steve Jobs, and many other cherished leaders for the past Have some partial insanity in them.
I was very pleased at how you finished up addressing the Elon subject at the end. Thank you for another wonderful read.

Most geniuses are partly insane

I’ve listened/read to all of Holidays books. Each one has almost been better than the rest. Taking stoic philosophy and making it very relatable.
I was a bit lost here. The messaging was just not breaking through.
It just seemed like a hit piece on Elon Musk. I just wanted to stop listing three quarters in and yell enough already.

Not His Best Body Of Work

It seems like he just phoned this one in He spends a lot of time on Elon Musk so he must’ve been trying to finish up the book to meet a deadline. I’m having a hard time getting through this final book
I was not going to write a review, but I just listened to a chapter on criticism and he says everyone needs some criticism.

Very repetitive seems like you’re listening to his podcast

Ryan Holiday is one of my favourite authors and he does great work but his polical bias was too strong and really ruined many sections of this book. He kept coming back to attacks on people though out the whole book. A mention here or there no big deal but 30% of this book is political attacks

his worst work so far

I had really been enjoying this series. I preordered this book, I was shocked to find that Ryan apparently is immune to his own advice in this book. "Only fools rely on strawman arguments" Then Ryan proceeds to question if Elon is a Nazi because of a gesture he made during a speech. As well as many other clams that he is a horrible person with little to no context. I expected a lot more from the author. Ryan ends the book with saying he could have met Elon because of his social circles in Austin but a apparently has chosen not to and prefers to rely on second and third hand accounts that fits his perception of the person. The attacks on Elon exposed Ryan as shallow and partisan which is really disappointing. This unfortunately taints everything he has written for me. Because if this I really can't recommend this book.

what a huge disappointment
