Description

"Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference." (Frederick Douglass, 1845)

The prophets of old were not easy to listen to because they did not flatter. They did not cajole. They spoke hard words that often chafed and unsettled their listeners. Like the Old Testament prophets, and more recent prophetic voices like Frederick Douglass, Dr. Eric Mason calls the evangelical church to a much-needed reckoning. In a time when many feel confused, complacent, or even angry, he challenges the church to:

  • Be aware - to understand that the issue of justice is not a black issue, it's a kingdom issue. To learn how the history of racism in America and in the church has tainted our witness to a watching world.
  • Be redemptive - to grieve and lament what we have lost and to regain our prophetic voice, calling the church to remember our gospel imperative to promote justice and mercy.
  • Be active - to move beyond polite, safe conversations about reconciliation and begin to set things aright for our soon-coming King, who will be looking for a woke church.

Don't bother with this book! Read Wilberforce's "Real Christianity."

After reading this book a couple of times and going through it with a group, I found Eric Mason to be just as stubborn and racist as the people he is preaching against. If you want a great book, but with better content, read Wilberforce's "Real Christianity." Wilberforce lays it down hard and with gusto! He also has the track record to back up his words. Not to mention he is responsible for abolishing the slave trade in England and lubricated the process in the States. If anyone can talk about this subject, It's Wilberforce. Don't bother with this book.

A timely read. Church, we need to listen.

Rich, challenging and gospel centered. It was helpful to read in community. This is not a book to rush through but it is easy to read.

Good overall

Narration was good. Editing should have been better. Overall it was good but it failed, most of the time, to speak to me powerfully. Some exceptions though. I did really like the emphasis on the image of God.

Let’s get WOKE!

Eric Mason has articulated the cry for biblical justice for all nations, tribes, peoples, and languages, highlighting the black Christian experience in America. Using the Gospel message, biblical text, and practical application, Mr. Mason offers tools for the modern church (collectively and individually) to impact the world. As Christians let’s vow not to be caught sleep—WAKE UP—it’s time to be WOKE!

Just buy the printed book

This is a great book, but it’s HORRIBLE on audible. Do yourself a favor and just buy the printed book.

A must read for our generation!

Practical, challenging and action oriented. Dr. Mason provides a must needed emphasis on the churches role during this age using the truth from God's Word.
