À propos de cet audio

Our words have an impact on our children, yet how often do we slow down long enough to really think about what that impact might be? Many common phrases we utter as parents have a negative effect on our kids, unintentionally causing anxiety, stress, self-consciousness, or depression. Some of them even become a barrier to our child's faith and their trust in Christ.

In Words Like Honey, sought-after speaker, writer, and mother of nine Amy Hughes explores specific words and phrases we commonly use when talking to our kids and considers the negative impact they may have. Things like "Hurry up," "Calm down," "Don't be sad," "You should be ashamed of yourself," "God doesn't give you more than you can handle," "You just need more faith," and more.

Then she offers alternative words and phrases, giving us the practical help we need to choose better language in the moment that will build up our children's confidence, faith, and sense of worth in the long run. With support from Scripture, stories, and studies throughout, this book offers compassion and encouragement for all of us who want to parent with more intention.

Amy’s message is one I needed to hear. After hearing Ginny and Amy’s conversation on 1000 Hours Outside podcast, I got this on audible and devoured it. (The only thing to make it better would be for the author to read it herself. I know that’s asking a lot!) I then went to Apple Podcasts and searched her name and book title and have been listening to all of those. Soon, I expect to re-listen to the book, and I would like to have a written copy sometime. Coming from a strict, conservative Christian background, I knew I wanted to do some things differently as a parent. Being a foster parent and learning about connected parenting, child development, and the effects of trauma also changed me. I have wrestled with my natural responses to my children and sometimes struggled to find balance in maintaining the core beliefs and values of our faith while also letting go of unnecessary things. To put relationships forefront and to look deeper than the surface.
I’m sure Amy’s family is very different from mine, but her core message of being thoughtful with our words, expressing unconditional love and value and acceptance to our children, and using our words to build up and nurture is one I’ll be forever grateful for. Along with the Bible, and other connected parenting resources. I find that I need to keep soaking myself in such messages to allow them to seep into my daily life and motherhood.Thank you, Amy. I hope to meet you one day!
