Description

He is a record collector and a connoisseur of vinyl, hunting out rare and elusive LPs. His business card describes him as the Vinyl Detective, and some people take this more literally than others.

For example, the beautiful, mysterious woman who wants to pay him a large sum of money to find a priceless lost recording on behalf of an extremely wealthy yet shadowy client. And so begins a painful and dangerous odyssey in search of the rarest jazz record of them all....

Hipster Noir

I have seen this described as Hipster Noir, and that is spot on. In this unusual novel the unamed main character, a self proclaimed Vinyl Dectective (a very insolvent ex DJ) and a stunningly beautiful and very solvent mysterious woman search London (mostly) for one rare record.

It was a book in two parts (amusingly entitled side 1 and side 2), and the second "side", when it moved to the states, was a bit less compelling and the relationship with Ree even less believeable than the one with Nevada.

The novel was entertaining, and I really liked the passion about collecting vinyl records and the history of early Jazz.

Ben Allen brings Cartmel's characters to life

Skillful reading of a good story, particularly with respect to the female character, Nevada, which he nails so successfully, I kept on forgetting it was a man reading.
