Description

Piloting a shuttle through a deadly solar flare, Jean Grey saves the X-Men, but is possessed by one of the universe's most powerful forces - the Phoenix. As she adapts to her new powers, the mutant team launches an assault against the clandestine organization known as the Hellfire Club. Once inside, however, Jean is tricked by the villain Mastermind into betraying her teammates. She becomes first the Hellfire Club's Black Queen and then Dark Phoenix, as the power to destroy worlds bursts forth uncontrolled.

Shooting into deep space, Jean destroys an entire star system, then encounters a cruiser piloted by the spacefaring race the Shi'ar. When the cruiser is obliterated, the Shi'ar queen decrees that the Phoenix must die. But only the X-Men can hope to stop Dark Phoenix and save Jean Grey.

Satisfying

This is one of the most iconic Comic Book story-arcs ever written. Marvel authors/artists Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and John Byrne fashioned a refreshingly honest/innovative story involving the trapping of Jean Grey's psyche in an inconceivably powerful character.. that tore the X-men apart and led to death and destruction on a cosmic scale.
How effective is Stuart Moore's interpretation? Marvel/Sony Pictures tried to bring this story to the big screen twice.. and botched it both times. Even the Animated series' treatments were inadequate. Hopefully Marvel Studios/Disney will do a better job of it when they inevitably have a go, but until then, this is hands-down the best version I've encountered.
The writing is competent, descriptions are mind's-eye quality, and character reactions/motivations do the story justice. Moore adds insight to a genuinely enjoyable, pulse-quickening plot.

That said, it's not perfect. Character actions are sometimes illogical, dialogue is melodramatic/groan-inducing at times, and the novelization takes itself far too seriously - this is a Comic Book.. and deserves a more light touch.

Additionally, Nancy Wu does an "adequate" job reading this book at best. Her diction is clear, her timbre and tone fit the seriousness of the text, and she injects great emotiveness into the dialogue.. but Wu's pacing is off (requiring playback speed set at 1.15X for the optimal rate) and her voice-acting is straight-up awful - the attempts at male voices, accents, and sound effects are often cringeworthy.

Despite subpar narration and some genuine deficiencies, however, this is a solid interpretation of a classic X-men story. While the comic/graphic novel version of the tale remains the best, this novelization is quite enjoyable. Performance by a full cast would doubtless improve the product, but this audiobook treatment still merits 8.5 stars out of 10. It's worth a Credit if you're a comicbook geek like me looking to relive some Classic X-men fare.

One of the more decent adaptations

Good performance by the narrator. As far as the story goes, one of the better adaptations of an famous comic Saga. Although the Wolverine-heavy influence felt film inspired.
