Histoire
Ricki Wilde has many talents, but being a Wilde isn’t one of them. As the impulsive artistic daughter of a powerful Atlanta dynasty, she’s the opposite of her famous socialite sisters. Where they’re long-stemmed roses, she’s a dandelion: an adorable bloom that’s actually a weed, born to float wherever the wind blows. In her bones, Ricki knows that somewhere, a different, more exciting life awaits her. When regal nonagenarian Ms. Della invites her to rent the bottom floor of her Harlem brownstone, Ricki jumps at the chance for a fresh beginning.

Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. As an expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the African-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. She dreams of becoming a children’s books editor, but she’s been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Description
“Yinka is a lovable and relatable disaster—which is to say, she isn’t actually a disaster at all...I adore her.”—Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers
“Feel good, funny, and clever, it’s got smash-hit written all over it!” –Josie Silver, New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December
Meet Yinka: a thirty-something, Oxford-educated, British Nigerian woman with a well-paid job, good friends, and a mother whose constant refrain is “Yinka, where is your huzband?”
Yinka’s Nigerian aunties frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, her work friends think she’s too traditional (she’s saving herself for marriage!), her girlfriends think she needs to get over her ex already, and the men in her life…well, that’s a whole other story. But Yinka herself has always believed that true love will find her when the time is right.
Still, when her cousin gets engaged, Yinka commences Operation Find-A-Date for Rachel's Wedding. Aided by a spreadsheet and her best friend, Yinka is determined to succeed. Will Yinka find herself a huzband? And what if the thing she really needs to find is herself?
Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? is a fresh, uplifting story of an unconventional heroine who bravely asks the questions we all have about love. Wry, moving, irresistible, this is a love story that makes you smile but also makes you think--and explores what it means to find your way between two cultures, both of which are yours.
NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2022 BY MARIE CLAIRE, PARADE, ESSENCE, MS. MAGAZINE, Popsugar, Bustle, Bookriot, Debutiful and More!
Ce que les critiques en disent
“A cautionary tale of the pernicious effects of sexism, racism and colorism upon women of the African diaspora….In the end, what matters most in Yinka is not your marital status but self-love, love of family and a broader sense of connection. And maybe you’ll find something better than a happily-ever-after fairy tale.”—Mabinty Quarshie, USA Today’s “Rom-Com Roundup: Top January Reading List”
“Fresh, heartfelt, and funny, Yinka is a can't miss debut that feels like a new classic.”—Buzzfeed
“The novel depicts the challenge of navigating two cultures, both of which Yinka is a part of and apart from. In her commitment to being her whole self and true to her faith and ideals, Yinka writes a prayer for herself, a rallying cry to which we can all shout, 'Amen!'” —NPR

superb narration
The storyline was nice, not really new though. I especially enjoyed witnessing Yinka's slow (maybe not so slow) decline to rock bottom. It was hilarious to me, sort of brought to mind the main protagonists story in never have I ever. One new low everytime you think she has hit rock bottom. Behind the laughs though, it was thought provoking and the narrator made me love and care for Yinka.....her vulnerability was palpable. I would 100% listen to anything narrated by Ronke. Even a drug info sheet lol!.

Amazing, amazing, amazing
This book is fantastic, would highly recommend. The narration was so good, it was very emotive - some narration styles are so dry but this one did not disappoint. The writing and narration were both so funny and realistic. I enjoyed feeling like a fly on the wall but at the same time it felt as if Yinka was my friend and filling me in on her life. Ten out ten!!

I loved this book
I could relate to so many of the themes, especially self-love and breaking generational curses. I initially borrowed it from the library but bought it halfway through. Like Yinka’s therapist, my Caribbean background makes a lot of what she goes thru feel familiar. I understood her wanting things that have been ingrained in her while also wanting to just be loved for herself while never truly loving herself. I love her transformation, along with other characters around her. It was like reading a Sophie Kinsella or Marian Keyes but the main character looks and talks like me..their family, their friends think and act like mine. The audiobook just upped the story with real-like sounds like Yinka writing and sending texts. Ronke was an amazing narrator.

It’s not what I thought it will be
I’ve seen Yinka referenced as an updated Bridget Jones and I’ll certainly allow it. Like my darling Bridg, Yinka is a bit of a lost soul. At 30-something the man she was with for three years and was positive she would marry has dumped her. Her sure-to-be promotion has instead resulted in her termination due to redundancy. Her best friends all seem to be moving on to different phases of their lives, leaving her in the dust. Not to mention her pregnant sister has Yinka’s mother beating the dead horse asking “where is your huzband?
For the most part I thought this was an okay debut, but definitely one where the end message has to be worth the struggle of the story as a whole in order to obtain a high(er) rating. The major complaint I had was poor Yinka severely needed an.
It finally came, but not before I had made a least a dozen notes regarding her personality being more befitting of a 13 year old rather than a grown woman. Talk about someone with zero social clues when it came to the opposite sex! But aside from wanting to shake the shit out of her when it came to matters of the heart, I mostly enjoyed reading about Yinka and her friends. While the culture may have been different, the trials and tribulations will be familiar to many women (get married/have babies or you’re a failure) and Yinka’s personal issues with self-esteem and self-worth due to her dark skin was something readers will empathize with. I feel bad for the girl, she has a very lowwwwww esteem and it’s absolutely ugly. I wish she knew that she was beautiful just as she is, but overall it’s a good read, but not my favourite
