way too long!

while the elements abd the strategies in the book are good, some of the stories could have been omitted to shorten the 11 hours of audio.

Amazing book!

I was waiting for this book's audio version for some time and it did not disappoint. It's gives a totally different perspective from other finance books that I read before. As I want to be financially independent and to retire early in the future there is so much to take away from this book and to apply in your daily life. I will definitely reread this book a couple of times as so much valuable information is in there. Thanks #Audible1 for always providing great book selection for your subscribers.

Don't recommend at all

If we add a ghastly performance (I wanted to stop listening as soon as I started because of the voice tone and general pronunciation) to some empty content (doesn't give any really helpful tips, in my opinion) and to the fact that half of the book is just repeating the same concepts over and over and over, we get a "Don't recommend at all".
Sidenote: May help if you're a COMPLETE mess financially; otherwise, you will lose oh so many hours of your life...

Not A Book About Finances

I had a lot of problems with this book. If you're looking for something that will teach you about money look elsewhere. The author spends the whole book talking about people who used "this step" of her program or "that step" but it isn't very practical. She seems to think that working full time just leaves people lonely and bad parents or bad partners and the only way anyone is going to be happy is by buying land in the middle of nowhere and learning to farm and fix your own stuff when it breaks. The only way to reach financial independence is by not spending any of your money, giving it to charity, working for some kind of a charity and never going shopping or buying anything.
When I figured out that this book was less about how to get your money to work for you and more about how to figure out what is "enough" I tried to shift my thinking but the author insistence that people will never be happy unless they quit their high paying jobs as computer programmers to teach children to write code for a quarter of your previous salary was just down right annoying.
If you're actually interested in what her program entails and not listen to a bunch of stories about how a hotel maid in WA paid off thousands in debt by just being a reliable person who was fortunate enough to be available when her boss needed to promote someone, skip to the end. She tells you the steps in the last chapter. There is a few useful bits of info in this book, more particularly the chapter on investing but she never really goes in depth and just talks about these well known money folks like JL Collins and Mr. Money Mustache.
Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with this book. Not sure what all of the hype is about.

only useful to the utterly clueless

I was hoping to hear tips about how Vicki Robin made it through decades of market ups and downs after early retirement. Instead, I got a loooong, chiding lecture about my terrible materialism and how dumb I must be about my life and my money. The author addresses all criticism directly at the reader as though we're all white-picket-fencers with 2 enormous homes and an out-of-control shopping habit.

I'm a self-employed single person planning to retire in my mid-forties, so basic financial management is not new to me. I *would* like to hear about how she managed decades of changing markets without income, but this book was totally useless in that regard.

If you feel that your spending is out of control and this is your FIRST book on personal finance, it might be worth reading.

Great to remember what you are working for!

I'm completely fascinated now about the entire FIRE concept/ FI community. I just wish I had heard this and "Set for Life" 20 years ago. Sadly, my kids won't listen to my "self help/motivational" books.

This really is a great book, it makes you really think about why you are working, why and how you spend your money and your life energy....

It Got Me To Take Action

Great book! It opened my eyes to a lot of things. I realized that there was a lot of money in front of me that I could've been saving. I've made a ton of changes since reading the listening to the book and will continue to make more. Thank you Vicki!

Long, hard, uncomfortable and critical

This book made me uncomfortable for all the right reasons. Vicki breaks it down but keeps it simple at the same time.

Whether you want to be financially independent or just save a few bucks, this book is excellent.

Wonderful information

The information in this book is fantastic and it has helped change my perspective on spending and saving money. However, I think I physical copy of this book or e-book would be more beneficial than the audiobook. I want to do the 9 steps now that I've finished, but have to click back to the different sections to find them.

Great Information

This books is filled with great information. The only complaint I have is the narration is a little boring and the lady does not seem excited about the topic. The slowness and tone would make me feel sleepy.

Great New Resource for Millennials

As a millennial anxious to finish my PhD, but uninterested in working 8 to 5 for the next 20-30 years, this book provided a holistic view of money, time, life energy, and the quality of living. This isn't a finance book it's a life, energy, and money management tool. Lots of info about the 'why' for you to consider as you create your plan using these steps .

Life changing!

As soon as I finished this book, I started listening again. This has been a life changing book for me. Vicki's wisdom and advice helped me to gain control over my finances and to plan for a brighter future. The information is really practical with step by step actions to gain greater insight of where your money is going, so that you can then follow more steps to make sure you are managing it wisely. I highly recommend this book and can see why it is consistently a bestseller!
