This week, we review Batman & Robin (1997), Joel Schumacher’s neon-drenched, camp-infused take on the superhero genre. George Clooney dons the cowl as Batman, with Chris O'Donnell returning as Robin, joined by Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl. Together, they face off against a pun-happy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and the seductive Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) in a Gotham that looks more like a laser tag arena than a city in peril. With its over-the-top costumes, toyetic set pieces, and infamous one-liners, this film raises intriguing questions about how far a franchise can stray before it freezes over.
