Who is God?
Before Jesus ever says, "I am the bread of life" or "I am the light of the world," John's Gospel invites us to wrestle with a deeper question. What does it mean for God to say, "I Am"?
In this opening teaching of the series Who Is Jesus? Encountering the Great "I Am" in John's Gospel, we begin in Exodus 3 with Moses before the burning bush. There, God reveals his holy presence, his compassion for suffering people, and his name. "I Am."
By tracing the meaning of God's self-revelation in Exodus, we discover why Jesus' use of "I am" language in John's Gospel is so unsettling and so powerful. Jesus is not merely explaining God. He is identifying himself with the God who spoke from the fire.
