 In sharing my personal memoirs, I approach this endeavor with a genuine intention to treat all parties fairly—both Union and Confederate—while acknowledging that I may not always highlight every deserving story. The vastness of the subject matter makes it impossible to cover every act of bravery and sacrifice in just two volumes. Many remarkable tales of individual and collective heroism during the Civil War remain unmentioned, and those involved should consult their commanders detailed reports for a fuller account of those extraordinary deeds.
