  • Episode 8: Cheap plane tickets and fraudulent passports
    Sep 14 2023

Temi and Liz catch up for the first time since Temi moved back to the States. We chat life updates, Ivorian passport scandal, visas to Europe and – most importantly – how to save money when buying plane tickets.

    Suggestions we offer:

    • Use a VPN and incognito internet window when you browse for tickets

    • Buying tickets on a Tuesday can sometimes be cheaper

    • Become airline loyal to accumulate miles and save money for your loyalty

    • Use airline credit cards to access additional travel benefits

    • Typically, it's best to book through the airline's website rather than a 3rd party booking agent (except for certain exceptions)

    • Use Google Flights to browse flights – the algorithm will find the best prices, but will send you to the airline's website to book

    • For long trips with multiple layovers, spend some time researching and booking each leg individually – this can also cut down on travel time

    • Use sites like Skiplagged.com to book tickets where you skip your last connecting flight (this only works if you don't check luggage and be careful to avoid airline penalties)

    • When traveling to Europe, find a ticket to the cheapest city/country, then take a budget airline to your destination city

    • Read fine print for budget airlines to make sure you won't get hit with unexpected fees for things like carry-ons

    • Use flexible dates when shopping for plane tickets – select the cheapest departure and return dates

    • Use going.com to get newsletters about destinations during inexpensive time windows

    • Use Google Flights to set up price alerts to know when ticket prices go down during the travel dates you're wanting

Temi and Liz take remote podcasting for a test drive while Liz spends a few weeks in Kansas. We catch up on our respective travels and what the future entails as Temi prepares to move back to the US.

This first remote episode doesn’t have great sound quality. We learned from it and we’ll do better next time. Thanks for sticking with us!

  • Episode 6: Temi gets malaria and we talk about race (Misconceptions about Africa pt. 3/3)
    Jun 26 2023

In our 3rd and final episode in this small series on misconceptions, we dive into a few more common misconceptions we’ve heard about Africa and our lives in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, including:

    • Infrastructure: clean running water, electricity, roads, etc.

    • Do you feel safe there?

    • Malaria is scary!

    • Can you get good healthcare?

Note: Liz mentioned some fuzzy statistics about twins in Africa during this episode. Here is the real information:

    • 41% of the world's twins come from Africa while only 13% of the world's entire population is in Africa

    • 20 of every 1,000 births are twins (compared to 12 of 1,000 in Europe and 7 of 1,000 in of Asia).
