  • Authorised 2025 Series 6 Episode 18 Anne Vines & A L Booth.
    Sep 15 2025

Books allow us to engage in eras and events that our mortal beings cannot and in this episode of Authorised, two very talented authors take us back in time to a very different Australia to the one we currently live in.

Flight by Anne Vines (Glass House Books) brings 1942 Melbourne alive with the threat of a Japanese invasion in the air and platoons of American servicemen on the ground. What started as a short story has blossomed into a tale that reflects the fabric of a city and its people in a time of uncertainty, a love story that has its own enemies and challenges and a society fractured by forces not of the military kind.

A L Booth takes us even further back with her book Death at Booroomba (Ventura Press). Just days before leaving to fight for his country on the battlefields of World War 1, Jack O'Rourke dives into Sydney Harbour to save a drowning man. It is the beginning of a saga that takes the reader on a historical roller coaster ride of emotions. Though set in a small Australian country town, this is a big story in so many ways.

Give Dad a book this Father's Day, and I have three nominations for you to consider from the two authors who join me in this episode. Sports fans have something special whenever author Glen Humphries releases a new title and in this case it is double the pleasure. Glen's 'Great Sporting Sites' pays homage to our colourful, famous and not so famous venues across the country while 'Kevin Sheedy's Bomber Jacket' is filled with tales tall and true from Aussie Rules football, our unique indidgenious game that thrills, frustrates, beguiles and entertains a nation.
