In this section, Paul wants to be really clear on how we get right with God: not through our good works, or our religious heritage, or in keeping God’s law… No, says Paul, the only way to get right with God is by the salvation that comes by faith in Jesus Christ. It’s why Paul puts his relationship with Jesus ahead of everything else: he wants to know Jesus better.

In these verses, Paul is thinking about the people of God being distinctive – shining brightly for Jesus in a dark world. That will mean working on our obedience and humility, so that over time we begin to develop a Christ-like character, each one shining like a star as we hold out the word of life.

Against these rather unpleasant character traits Paul points them to the best example he knows: 'your attitude,' he says, 'should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.'
