  • When Kindness Isn’t Enough Anymore
    Jan 20 2026

    Send me a message

In this episode, Bill Monty reflects on a message he has often shared—be kind to one another—and explains why the current moment demands something more from older Americans.

Drawing on lived experience and historical memory, Bill discusses why anger, when informed and purposeful, can be a responsible and necessary response to the erosion of democratic norms. He explores how the balance of power outlined in the U.S. Constitution is meant to function, why executive overreach should concern citizens of all ages, and how agencies like ICE came into existence—and what limits were intended to restrain their power.

This episode is not about fear or division. It is about clarity, civic responsibility, and the unique role older generations can play by speaking up, educating younger Americans, and refusing to remain silent when rights and institutions are weakened.

If this episode resonated with you, please Follow or Subscribe to Bill Monty’s Guide for Getting Older. Be sure to Like, Share, and leave a review—your support helps these conversations reach others who need to hear them.

  • Medicare, Medicaid and the Price of Growing Older in America
    Nov 4 2025

    Send me a message

In this episode, I not only revisit the never-ending saga of Medicare and Medicaid and the failure of these systems for many Americans but I alsom look at one particular man. His name was Peter David. He was an author, and he was a star among comic book fans for his amazing body of work for the major publishers of science fiction and super-heroes.

But...when he needed someone to leap tall buildings in a single bound for him, when he and his family thought that they could rely on the various insurances, private and government sponsored, to help him when he needed it most, well those same entities became the villians of the story.

And that isn't right. Not in America.

I also discuss the latest, laughable increase in social security for those who receive that benefit and how the recent inflation and Medicare price hike news basically wipes that out before it even takes effect.

I always ask that each of us strive to be kind, but to paraphrase one of Peter David's heroes, maybe it's time that HULK SMASH!

  • Dame Patricia Routledge and the Art of Aging Gracefully
    Oct 14 2025

    Send me a message

This week, we say farewell to Dame Patricia Routledge — the unforgettable Hyacinth “Bouquet” from Keeping Up Appearances. At 96, Dame Patricia left behind more than laughter; she left lessons on living fully at every age.

From British sitcom fame to singing opera in Italian at 60, painting flowers at 80, and baking rye bread at 95, Dame Patricia never stopped learning, laughing, or blooming. In this episode, I reflect on her remarkable life and what it teaches us about embracing aging — not as an ending, but as a beautiful new chapter.

    We’ll also talk about:

    • The surprising way Patricia Routledge found peace in her later years
    • How to keep growing, learning, and creating joy at any age
    • My own thoughts on aging, reinvention, and why “you still have time”

👉 Plus, I share a few podcast recommendations — including You Still Have Time and Impariamo l’Italiano Piano Piano — for anyone looking to keep their mind and heart young.

    As Dame Patricia once said:

“Growing older is not the closing act. It can be the most exquisite chapter if you let yourself bloom again.”

Rest in peace, Dame Patricia — and thank you for showing us how to bloom. 🌷

🎧 Listen now and don’t forget to follow, rate, and share Bill Monty’s Guide for Getting Older.
Stay safe, stay kind, and keep blooming.

  • We've Been Here Before: Senior Wisdom in Divided Times
    Sep 23 2025

    Send me a message

In this episode, I explore how today's political division, fear, and censorship in America echo some of the darkest chapters in our history - the American Revolution, the Civil War, the McArthy era of the 1950's, Vietnam, Nixon, Watergate and the horror and terror pf 9/11.

Is it time for young people who have lived a very long time to take up the reins of common sense and attempt to quell the fires of suspicion and hatred that have caused us to lose the ability to have civil discourse when we don't agree? If so, how do we do this?

One way is to use out hard-won wisdom to guide others, to assure them that we have been down these streets before and we always manage to come back strong.

I say yes. It is time to lead with calm, courage and clarity.

    Join me.
