    Jun 12 2025

Show #197 airdate 06-11-25 - Stewart Howden welcomes Consulting Director, Audrain Concours, TV Personality, Author, Senior Appraiser and Classic Car Historian, Donald Osborne. The crew tries to guess his car from the interior view plus, a discussion of his career so far and a lot of insight on choosing the right classic car, pricing them, doing "baseline service" as well as buying his first classic and "marzipan". Also Keith Martin of Sports Car Market's special offer, younger collectors and "BAT". https://www.audrainconcours.com https://bit.ly/4hvXWKV https://www.buzzsprout.com/2197312

Donald Osborne is the amazing guest on Episode 197 of the weekly Classic Auto Mall Show with host Stewart Howden. Donald has had an amazing career that has included being the CEO of Audrain LLC and the Audrain Concours d’Elegance, he has been the Co-host of the TV Show “What’s My Car Worth” on the Discovery Channel, he was an editor and contributor to Sports Car Market Magazine, plus he was a featured contributor on “Jay Leno’s Garage” with the segment “Assess and Caress with Donald Osborne”.

How do you know a car’s value and what you should buy or sell it for. They also discuss low ball offers and people who always feel like they need to get a deal even if the price is already below market value. What is the right price for the wrong car? Sometimes people are searching for a very specific car and end up buying something completely different. They also discuss the reasons people buy cars – it could be simply to drive or maybe they want to win a car show. And some people want to buy a car to drive but end up not buying it because it’s too perfect.

What is the right price to pay for a car. They discuss car appraisals. There are three levels of appraisal. One level of appraisal is for insurance value for replacement, there is IRS fair market value if you are going to donate it or if it’s part of an estate and there is marketable cash value if you are going to sell it or liquidate.

Donald also talks about his time on the TV Show ‘What’s My Car Worth’ with co-host Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine. It taught him what he needed to look for when buying a car at auction – many are polished and look great with low mileage, but doesn’t drive very well. If car at an auction has a full tank of gas is often a good sign.

Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine joins to discuss his weekly blog. The topic this week is the Portland Bring A Trailer Meet and Show. Keith discusses how amazing it is that an online company of basically anonymous people created events where people can meet each other in person to talk cars. People use Randy Nonnenberg’s Bring a Trailer sales history to understand the values of cars.

Hall of Fame Race Car Driver John Morton joins the show to talk about his incredible career as well as being inducted in the SEMA Hall of Fame and his upcoming induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame with the class of 2026.

John talks about going to the Caroll Shelby Racing School where he drove the first Cobra ever built, chassis 2000. He also raced the first 427 Cobra that was nicknamed The Turd and later sold for $13 Million after Caroll Shelby died.

John worked for Peter Brock at Brock Racing Enterprises. John had been building oil pans for him because he could weld and Peter was also his instructor at the Shelby Driving School. Peter wanted John to build the second Datsun, which he eventually drove and raced. He talks about racing the 510 Datsun as well as the 240Z for BRE Peter Brock Racing in the early 1970s. They discuss the popularity and rising values of the early Datsun 240Z cars. Winning races probably helped the early Japanese cars be successful in the United States.

He talks about the importance of SCCA Hall of Famer Bob Sharp who worked with actor Paul Newman racing Datsuns. In 1970 and 1971 they won the pole on 16 of 19 races including every race in 1971. We never thought we’d see Toyota racing in NASCAR, but they’re competing. They discuss how F1 has changed from being exciting to watch to somewhat boring. What if they didn’t face F1 cars in the infield at Indy and only raced the oval. F1 racing isn’t as dangerous as football.

John and Stewart talk about SIM Simulated Racing vs real driving vs walking the track prior to a race. They discuss Alex Palou winning the Indianapolis 500 as well as first time driver Robert Shwartzman w

  • Classic Auto Mall Show #193 - Audrain Newport Concours and Motor Week Executive Director Nic Waller Plus Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine with Host Stewart Howden
    May 22 2025

Show #193 airdate 05-14-25 Stewart welcomes Nic Waller, President of Audrain Group and Audrain Concours Motor Week to discuss the Audrain Museum and the Concours event at #Breakers Mansion in #RhodeIsland. They also discuss training young people for classic body and mechanical restoration careers and noted authority and TV personality #WayneCarini + Keith Martin of Sports Car Market talks about the "disappearing car show" and asks what you dislike about your car. https://www.audrainconcours.com/ https://www.audrainautomuseum.org/ https://www.mcpherson.edu/ https://www.goodwood.com

Nic Waller, Executive Director of the Audrain Concours and Motor Week in Newport joins Stewart on this week’s show. Nic talks about his upcoming European trip and tour where he will be displaying some amazing cars at Villa d’Este in Italy. Nic talks about getting to travel and enjoy amazing cars and people. We get to see the incredible grounds and mansion and ocean view where the Audrain Concours is held in Newport Rhode Island.

Stewart and Nic go over the importance of the Pebble Beach Concours and how amazing the event is each year and how last year was the first time a preservation car won Best of Show. This leads to a debate of whether Concours events should have a separate category for unrestored or preservation cars as well las a category for Best of Show that is only restored cars. But this means the term preservation needs to be defined because a barn find isn’t a preserved car. A barn find is just an abandoned car. They talk about the setting of the event at Audrain and the Breakers Mansion. They discuss how the first road race happened in Newport when the Vanderbilts would race around the area in their Renaults.

Last year the People’s Choice Award went to a 1958 Devin SS SR2-6 Roadster. Stewart’s favorite car from the 2024 Audrain Newport Concours was the outrageous 1961 Chrysler New Yorker Station Wagon. Seeing these cars is important to preserving the history of all cars – from muscle cars to European to station wagons. Audrain is expanding their classes so a wider range of cars can participate. The most elegant car last year was the 1937 Delahaye 135 Coupe des Alpes.

Keith Martin, Publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine joins the show to discuss car shows he’s been attending and what makes them great, including the Portland Transmission Warehouse Show which has grown to more than 1,000 cars. Keith likes to ask people what they like best about their car. He talks about how people love to tell stories about their cars and how he enjoys hearing the stories. They discuss how people remember the first car they drove and owned and how cars bring back memories.
