I enjoyed this story of young Jerusha, raised in an orphan "asylum", who receives the gift of a college education from an unknown trustee. She is lively, curious and intelligent and does well at college, while writing increasingly personal letters to her anonymous benefactor. She makes two good friends and through them, young men and real families and a friend's special youngish Uncle Jervis. There are two narrators, both with individual styles. I found this story surprisingly modern, in spite of some dated opinions and language. Jerusha's bright spirit shines through her difficult upbringing.
