Last month I had a great conversation with 30+ year editing and producing veteran Chris Fenwick about what it takes to make it in this business. He used the analogy of "standing on a chair" to make a point. In the context of that conversation was his commentary about a female assistant editor in Hollywood who as featured in the second installment of our Breaking the Glass docu-film series. The editor, Christine Haslett, shared frustrations about not advancing as far as she would've liked in her field. JD heard Chris' commentary on her situation and felt in the context of Christine, the "stand on a chair" analogy was not only way off the mark, but he felt it also sabotaged the very message "Breaking the Glass" series is trying to convey. As he put it, "He wanted to knock the guy over who was standing in the chair" (albeit, the way he described it was a tad more, um, colorful. :)
This is an episode that will make you laugh and/or get pissed (I'm sure you'll get mad at somebody in this episode). But most of all, I hope it makes you think. Here's the first episode of FCPX Grill after its 14-month hiatus.
