Part One of a Three-Part Series on San Antonio Academy's Huddles Program

In this episode, Semmes Foundation Head of School Paul Quick sits down with Dr. Patrick Atkerson, Director of Student Services, to explore The Why of Huddles—how the program began, why it matters, and the lasting impact it has on Academy boys.

A central part of the Military Leadership Program, Huddles were designed to give Academy boys meaningful opportunities to:

  • Learn, grow, and live out the Pillars of an Academy Boy and the school code
  • Give opportunities for the older boys to lead the younger boys
  • Create a sense of friendly competition among the companies for the purpose of promoting positive behavior
  • Build and maintain esprit de corps

Each week, Huddles bring 3rd through 8th grade Academy boys together for engaging activities that promote leadership, teamwork, service, and pride in their school community. With activities such as developing company traditions and colors, goal setting and personal reflection, and group team-building and service projects, Huddles help the boys connect with one another while shaping the men they aspire to be.

Huddles aren’t only building leadership and teamwork; they connect the boys to the legacy of San Antonio Academy, encouraging them to look to the past as they develop their own vision for the future.

Listen now to learn why Huddles are an essential part of the Academy experience.
