After Ronnie James Dio left Black Sabbath, due to "creative differences," to pursue a solo career, Ozzy Osbourne continued to make massive waves with his solo career, and Black Sabbath was left in a nebulous space looking for their next singer and trying to figure out what their next steps look like. This next step came in the form of former Deep Purple singer and shrieker, Ian Gillan. Gillan only joined the band for one album and a short touring period before departing again, but helped Black Sabbath create a strangely unique and standalone record, never originally intended to be a Black Sabbath album.
