This SPOTLIGHT edition sees Anne Morris return as a guest to share the work she has been undertaking in creating PSHE materials for schools. This work has involved winding down the longstanding tutor organisation called 'Yipiyap', to venture into a media business that provides short online videos addressing issues such as bullying, consent and managing relationships. The chat starts with an example of such a video, and the 30 minutes or so discussion includes two further examples.

We consider why such material is necessary, how schools have engaged with it so far and how Anne is making it available for free, at least in the early stages of its development. With over 550 videos already, and many more in production, it has certainly taken off. We consider the leadership challenges Anne has faced during the year and how she managed to turn a problem, namely a changing tutor market, into a positive. As they say, when things get tough some of the best ideas follow.

Frank and Cathal's paths crossed back in 2019 at an event run by Forum Strategy. Cathal has an extensive career in school leadership, much of it in the Special Phase. When he was leading and offering support to other senior leaders he became aware of the importance of engagement with key stakeholders and how consistency in the approach was important. During our chat, he explained how this led to him considering how best to support schools embarking on change and how to create confidence amongst, pupils, parents/carers and staff in the process. He has developed a Wellbeing Quality Mark and offers this to schools. He's always keeping an eye on schools/trusts wanting to engage. It's a fascinating discussion that covers, academic research, leadership styles, honesty and vulnerability. Hope you enjoy it.

Following a few helpful comments from followers of our weekly chat we decided to focus a little more on adult education in this SPOTLIGHT edition. Simon Parkinson, CEO of the long established Workers Education Association (WEA) who was a guest on the weekly Frank and Stan Chat in August 2021 agreed to come back and provide an update on developments since then. We cover a host of issues including how the skills agenda is shifting nationally and the increasingly influential role of Regional Mayors, the continuing need to provide support for those needing to get into work, the changes to the rules around English and Maths to gain apprenticeships and how the need for specific skills are shifting with time. We even consider the skills required by stan's father in designing and making the steam engines that are on display in his office. Still relevant today? Enjoy.
