À propos de cet audio

Gatlinburg Radio is the mountain’s voice—a station devoted to the people, legends, and unsolved mysteries of the Smokies and Appalachia. From folklore and faith to history and high strangeness, we broadcast what others overlook. Gatlinburg Roots, in association with the Gatlinburg Heritage Club, brings factual stories of White Oak Flats, the early families who cleared these hills, and how that mountain settlement grew into Gatlinburg and the gateway to America’s most-visited national park.

  • The Riverside Hotel — Where Gatlinburg Grew Up
    Oct 21 2025

Gatlinburg Roots, in association with the Gatlinburg Heritage Club, presents the story of the Riverside Hotel—a place where Gatlinburg itself grew up. Built in 1914 by Stephen and Pearlie Whaley, the Riverside stood on the same ground many of us know today. Through wars and hard years the lamps in its lobby stayed lit, and by 1951 it had expanded with new rooms, a dining hall, a pool alive with summer laughter, and a second entrance added on River Road.

From rocking chairs on the porch to music drifting across the Smokies, this episode preserves the life and legacy of a hotel that helped shape the town’s spirit of welcome. Gatlinburg Roots and the Gatlinburg Heritage Club — in association with Gatlinburg Radio.
