  • Functional Nutrition: A Holistic Approach to our Health
    Jun 10 2025
Andrea Nakayama is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and the founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance. Functional Nutrition serves the needs of the individual. It recognizes each person’s unique capabilities for making the diet and lifestyle modifications that foster the physiological and psychological shifts that enable their body to cultivate its healing potential. Functional Nutrition does not exist in isolation of other health or medical support, but in tandem with it. Over two decades ago, Andrea’s husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given 6 months to live while she was pregnant with their first and only child. In response, she doubled down on an area she was passionate about – nutrition – in an attempt to extend his lifespan beyond his 30s. They made it over two years, he got to meet his son, and in the wake of his death, she discovered that she had developed Hashimoto’s. Andrea kept on professionally with her nutrition and functional medicine path and shares with all of us this way of managing our health. She knows that a functional nutrition approach is the answer to our healthcare crisis, both for individuals and for society at large.
