Six years later, another couple was murdered with the same gun while Mele sat in prison. Over the next decade, the Monster of Florence killed fourteen more people in lovers' lanes, always using the same twenty-two Beretta, always mutilating female victims. The murders escalated through the nineteen eighties, with the killer eventually sending body parts to prosecutors. The attacks stopped abruptly in nineteen eighty-five after claiming sixteen lives. Investigators pursued the Sardinian community connected to the original murders, eventually focusing on farmer Pietro Pacciani, but fundamental questions remained unanswered.
