Episode 154: Nurturing Creativity - the Powers of Arts & Crafts for Mental, Emotional Wellbeing

Let's Talk Clarity - Host Zeenat Noorani

Today’s episode is very close to Zeenat's heart. It’s all about something that often gets dismissed as ‘just a hobby’—but inTruth, it can be life-changing: the power of creativity, arts, and crafts in supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing.

    Zeenat explores:

Why creative expression is essential—not optional—for mental health

How creativity supports neurodivergent minds and different learners

The physical and cognitive benefits of hands-on creativity

And most importantly, how you—yes, you—can reclaim or nurture creativity in yourself or your children

Are we measuring intelligence by outdated standards and missing the genius in our children and ourselves?

“Creativity doesn’t just feel good—it’s good for us, mentally and physically.

Fine motor development: Arts and crafts improve hand-eye coordination and dexterity, especially important for young children and older adults. Problem-solving: Choosing colours, solving design challenges, or following patterns boosts cognitive flexibility. Brain chemistry: Engaging in creative tasks activates the reward system in the brain, releasing dopamine, the ‘feel good’ chemical.

Episode 152: Screen Time Overuse – Navigating the Battles Parents Face - Let's Talk Clarity Podcast - Host Zeenat NooraniZeenat's

Let's Talk Clarity is a podcast where we have open, honest, and empowering conversations about mental health and wellbeing.

Today, Zeenat dives into a topic that every parent and caregiver has faced at some point: screen time overuse. The endless battles over devices, the ‘just five more minutes’ pleas, and the worry that too much screen time is harming our children’s wellbeing.

Technology is a huge part of modern life—it’s how children learn, connect, and relax. But when does it become too much? And how do we, as parents and caregivers, set limits without constant conflict?

SEGMENT 1: THE REALITY OF SCREEN TIME OVERUSE

How much time do you think the average child spends on screens each day?

According to recent studies, children aged 8-12 spend an average of 4-6 hours on screens daily, while teenagers spend up to 9 hours. That’s more time than they spend sleeping or in school!

SEGMENT 2: THE BATTLES – WHY SCREEN TIME LEADS TO CONFLICT

Zeenat shares a scenario you might find familiar. As parents, how do we break this cycle without constant battles?”

SEGMENT 3: STRATEGIES TO REDUCE SCREEN TIME BATTLE

Six practical strategies you can try:

    1. Collaborate, Don’t Dictate

    2. Set Clear, Consistent Boundaries

    3. Offer Engaging Alternatives

    4. Be a Role Model

    5. Use Technology Wisely

    6. Teach Digital Mindfulness

''The goal isn’t to control every minute—it’s to guide, model, and empower our children to develop a healthy, respectful relationship with technology. And remember, it’s okay to have off days. Progress, not perfection.”

    SEGMENT 4: FINAL THOUGHTS

    “The key takeaways''

If you need help navigating this challenge, I work with parents, schools, and communities to support children’s mental wellbeing.

You can reach out to me for guidance on setting healthy digital habits.
