  • A Community in Crisis: Lawyer Maker Mayek on Protecting South Sudanese Youth in Australia
    Sep 15 2025

In this powerful episode, we address the heartbreaking knife killings of two young South Sudanese boys in Melbourne—another devastating reminder of the violence tearing through our youth. We’re joined by Maker Mayek, a Melbourne-based lawyer and the CEO of the South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association, who shares a first-hand account of what’s happening on the ground. Together, we explore the root causes behind this wave of youth deaths, the fear gripping families, and what it means for our community’s future.

This conversation is not just about mourning loss—it’s a call to action. How do we protect our young people? What role do families, leaders, and institutions need to play? And how can we come together, across the diaspora, to stop burying our children too soon?

  • Pan-Africanism vs. Self Repair: Should We Unite or Fix Our Own House First?
    Aug 19 2025

In this episode of Ladies of SOSA, we sit down with a small panel to ask the uncomfortable but necessary question:

Is Pan-Africanism actually realistic… or should we focus on solving our own internal issues first?

We look at the original vision of Pan-Africanism — unity, global Black solidarity, collective liberation — and compare it to the realities we face today: civil conflict, regional divisions, toxic online spaces, and competing priorities across the continent and diaspora.

    We explore:

    • What early leaders like Marcus Garvey and Kwame Nkrumah wanted (and why it worked for a time)
    • Where Pan-Africanism shows up today (AfCFTA, culture, Afrobeats, political blocs)
    • Whether uniting means ignoring our internal problems
    • Can we do both — build unity and fix ourselves — or does one have to come first?

✨ Expect honest dialogue, balanced perspectives, and thought-provoking questions like:

“Can we really unite as Africans if we’re still divided in our own countries?”

Drop your thoughts in the comments — should we prioritize unity or self-healing first?

  • Feminism in South Sudanese vs. Western Culture | Navigating, Dating, Marriage and Careers 🇸🇸🇺🇸
    Aug 12 2025

In this special Ladies of SOSA episode — premiering on co-host Sahra’s birthday — Christine and Sahra sit down with a dynamic panel of South Sudanese voices to explore how feminism is understood in our culture today, and how it shapes women’s choices in marriage, career, and community life.

From the historical role of women as culture-keepers to navigating modern expectations, we unpack how tradition, education, and ambition can sometimes clash — and how women are finding ways to define success for themselves. Along the way, we share personal stories of breaking barriers, balancing cultural values with personal goals, and embracing empowerment in everyday life.

And yes — there’s cake, laughter, and a little birthday love woven in.

Whether you’re in Juba, the diaspora, or somewhere in between, this episode invites you to rethink what it means to be a South Sudanese woman today — in love, in work, and in life.
