This policy, enacted in 1942, attempted to get all the Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia to locate in either Sipekne'katik or Eskasoni. Bernie says, before that, Mi'kmaq were documented living in more than 50 communities around the province. Recordings of now-deceased elders suggest centralization allowed church leaders to more effectively prohibit use of the Mi'kmaw language.
