  • Bonus Episode: Nutritional Microbiology (GUT HEALTH & DIET) with Miguel Freitas and Elaine Hsiao
    Dec 15 2025

The microbiome is back! In 2018, we chatted with Dr. Elaine Hsiao - a UCLA microbiome researcher– and learned all about the hot cauldron of your guts. In this 2025 update bonus, we chat again with Dr. Hsiao to get updates on the last 7 years of her research. We also stop by White Plains, New York to hang out with Dr. Miguel Freitas, lead nutritional microbiologist and director of the non-profit Danone Institute North America, and ask a million questions about good vs bad microbiota, how they simulate a human gut in a lab, what exactly is a pre-biotic vs. probiotic, why are they such good friends, how diet can impact not only your gut health but also your heart and your brain — and if friendly yogurt critters are robust enough to make the journey from your mouth to your toilet.

Dehydrated eggs. Airborne tortillas. Pouches of chicken. Tang. Work up an appetite for space food with artist, designer and Astrobromatologist, Maggie Coblentz. She shares how the intersection of design and science led her skyward, doing experiments on zero G flights, and shipping miso into space. • Pteridology (FERNS) with Fay-Wei Li
    Dec 3 2025
Fronds. Forest dwellers. Spores. Houseplants. Queer icons. We’ve got ferns. The charming and hilarious professor and author of “Ferns: Lessons in Survival from Earth’s Most Adaptable Plants,” Dr. Fay-Wei Li, tells me all about fern evolution, what ferns not to have in your house, the most expensive ferns, the tastiest ferns, mathematical mysteries, and a genome that makes no sense, to me or a lot of Pteridologists. Also, can Between Two Ferns save science? This episode is, in Fay-Wei’s words, “ferntastic.”Visit Dr. Li’s lab website and follow him on Google ScholarBuy his book, Ferns: Lessons in Survival from Earth’s Most Adaptable Plants, on Bookshop.org or AmazonA donation went to the ASPT Herbarium Emergency FundMore episode sources and linksOther episodes you may enjoy: Bryology (MOSS), Domestic Phytology (HOUSEPLANTS), Neuroendocrinology (SEX & GENDER), Paleontology (DINOSAURS), Foraging Ecology (EATING WILD PLANTS, Ethnoecology (ETHNOBOTANY/NATIVE PLANTS), Dendrology (TREES), Myrmecology (ANTS), Forest Entomology (CREEPY CRAWLIES)400+ Ologies episodes sorted by topicSmologies (short, classroom-safe) episodesSponsors of OlogiesTranscripts and bleeped episodesBecome a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, hoodies, totes!Follow Ologies on Instagram and BlueskyFollow Alie Ward on Instagram and TikTokEditing by Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio Productions and Jake ChaffeeManaging Director: Susan HaleScheduling Producer: Noel DilworthTranscripts by Aveline Malek Website by Kelly R. Ologies is an AMAZING podcast! Alie's asides and voiceover explanations provide a greater context for the HUGE amount of knowledge that is enjoyably downloaded into my brain. I have told so many people about this podcast. I have inundated my family with the cool facts I have learned about SOOO many topics that they assumed anything I tell them now is from this podcast. Keep going Alie! You are the information hero we need in today's world.

AMAZING PODCAST, My new favourite one

This podcast was recommended to me and from the moment I pushed play I have been obsessed!! Seriously, my family and friends are now teasing me based on how often I recommend it. This podcast is a dream for anyone with a curious brain. I have learned so much from the wonderful, nerdy, passionate people featured. The sheer enthusiasm for life and science is infectious.

My only complaint is that there isn’t enough chemistry! I mean straight up chemistry because chemistry is at the heart of all science. I get it, chemistry doesn’t end in “ology” but seriously Alie, we can get around that. I can help! I will talk about chemistry all damn day. Why can that plant kill you if you eat it? Chemistry! What is a fire? Chemistry! Why do we salt sidewalks in the winter? Chemistry!

But anyway - give this podcast a listen and your curious mind will be hooked on it!

Love Love Love!

Alie can make any topic interesting and entertaining.
Her enthusiasm is infectious and her ability to break down complex explanations into easy to understand portions, without seeming to dumb it down or speak down to people is amazing. It’s more about translating to real world language and dispensing with all the jargon.
Real world language includes the odd swear word, which I love and appreciate!
Incredibly passionate guests present the things they know so much about. It’s hard not to want to strive off into the sunset after each episode, determined to become the next entomologist, paleontologist, experimental archeologist, or even create your own new ology by following your own weird personal niche interest

Fantastic podcast that makes topics interesting and fun
