For our fourth episode, we're catching up with award-winning Mununjali Yugambeh author, editor, and educator, Ellen van Neerven. EvN‘s first book, Heat and Light (UQP, 2014; 2023), a novel-in-stories, was the recipient of the David Unaipon Award, the Dobbie Literary Award and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Indigenous Writers Prize. Their first poetry collection Comfort Food (UQP, 2016) won the Tina Kane Emergent Award and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Kenneth Slessor Prize. Throat (UQP, 2020) was the recipient of Book of the Year, the Kenneth Slessor Prize and the Multicultural Award at 2021 NSW Literary Awards and the inaugural Quentin Bryce Award. Personal Score: Sport, Culture, Identity (UQP, 2023), a book that weaves history, memoir, journalism and poetry, received the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Non Fiction and is available on Turtle Island through Two Dollar Radio. They are the editor of several collections, most recently Shapeshifting: First Nations Lyric Nonfiction with Jeanine Leane.

On today's episode, we chat with painter, textile artist, installation artist and performance artist Troy-Anthony Baylis. A descendant of the Jawoyn people from the Northern Territory, Baylis is part of a larger contemporary movement exploring Indigeneity and sexuality through a cross disciplinary lens, traversing visual art, performance and literature. His multi-faceted artistic practice is founded in the process of ‘queering’ and unsettling traditional ways of representing Aboriginality. Baylis' work has been subject of 29 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions, performances, and publications since 1993, and he was the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Guildhouse Fellowship (2019). In 2026 Wakefield Press will publish a major monograph on the artist’s work that will coincide with him being the 2026 SALA Festival feature artist.

Today's guest is the remarkable Black trans filmmaker Campbell X. Campbell X's work deals with queer memory, desire and Blackness across the African diaspora through filmmaking, theatre and curation. He directed the award-winning queer urban romantic comedy feature film STUD LIFE which was voted by the Guardian as one of the top 10 Black British feature films ever made, and also voted as one of the top 25 films of the century by film critic Ryan Gilbey. Campbell's second feature Low Rider had its world premiere in Edinburgh film Festival in 2025. Low Rider a queer road trip Low Rider was filmed in the Western Cape region of South Africa and stars Emma Mcdonald and Thishiwe Ziqubu. In our discussion, we dive into another recent work by Campbell -- his short film UNTITLED(2025), an incantation to our Indigenous ancestors from the Global Majority who experienced enforced binary genders, colonialism and the theft of land and resources.
