Remember That Guy?

Auteur(s): James Diaz and Xavier
  • Résumé

  • The show where we mine our memories for nuggets of nostalgia about peripheral players past and present.

Every week, Hosts Diaz and James (along with Very Special Guest Xavier) do what sports fans love to do best: sit around and Remember Some Guys.

But just what is a Guy? To paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of [players] I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [...] But I know it when I see it".

Whether it's a perennial postseason over-performer, a hometown hero who only appears that way through rose colored glasses, or just a really great story that has to be shared - Guys of every shape, size, sport, and gender are welcome in the storied halls of our memories.

So sit back, relax, and stop worrying about playoff positioning, draft order, or the dreaded salary cap. Take some time, instead, to Remember That Guy.

  • RTG? 096: One of a Guy-nd
    Jun 17 2024

Sometimes when a true great comes around, you might say they broke the mold with that one. Well when a true Guy comes around, they make the mold; and this week Hosts James and Diaz get together with their Very Special Guest Xavier to discuss Guys Who Created Archetypes.

Xavier begins the proceedings with a Guy who seems like a perfect 10 but is in fact something else (11:13); Diaz runs us through the life of a Guy who took marathon training to new heights (33:41); and James appropriately finishes off with a relevant story for the last spot (58:38). These Guys have broken ground before, but they'll look to follow in some footsteps this time as we see which one will follow past inductees into the Hall of Guy. (1:21:39)

  • RTG? 095: Me Llamo Guy
    Jun 10 2024

This week the gang is shaking what their respective moms and dads gave them, as Hosts James and Diaz get some help from Very Special Guest in discussing Guys who also have that same parental gift: that is to say, Guys Who Have The Same Name As Them.

Xavier gives us his own x-cellent origin story with a well compensated member of the board (22:07); Diaz goes the distance with a Guy who reminds us all of his secret first name (44:09); and James shares the fishy explanation for the nickname a certain athletic Guy never picked (1:06:08). They may be more familiar with these Guys' names than most weeks, but which of them will hear their name called for induction into the Hall of Guy? (1:28:46)

Theme Music by Don Ham; additional audio from The Price Is Right!, Quad City DJs, Singles, and Bob Dylan

  • RTG? 094.1: For Your Consideration - The Father, The Son, And The Holy Guy
    Jun 3 2024

If the Guy moves you then pull up a folding chair to straddle while sitting backwards for this week's episode as Hosts James and Diaz along with Very Special Guest Xavier welcome the show's Minister of Sport: co-host of the Shutdown Fullcast and author of Hell Is A World Without You Jason Kirk.

Once the crew introduces Jason to the RTG? faithful with a discussion of his book as well as some Guys from the Good Book (26:00), he introduces a trinity of Guys to consider for enshrinement (54:14). But unfortunately, there's no 3-for-1 special in this hallowed cathedral, and only one will earn a spot in the Hall of Guy. (1:13:21)

You can find more about Hell Is A World Without You and all of Jason's various podcasts and works at his website.
