  • PREVIEW: A lot riding on this weekend
    Sep 26 2025

There's a lot riding on the next few days for San Diego's sports teams. The Padres have a chance to move their Wild Card series from Chicago to San Diego, the San Diego Wave need a win to stay in the NWSL playoff hunt, San Diego FC can break a handful of MLS records with a win in their final home game of the regular season, and San Diego State's football team needs a win on the road against Northern Illinois to carry forward their momentum off of last week's win over Cal.

That's to say nothing of the sterling college football slate of games on Saturday and the Ryder Cup, which started today and will be going on all weekend long.

Darren Smith and John Gennaro cover all of it, and play another round of Try This!, to get you ready for the weekend.

  • PREVIEW: Jared Diamond identifies the Padres' postseason Achilles' heel
    Sep 25 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro discuss Ramón Laureano's broken finger and what it means for the San Diego Padres' hopes of making it to the World Series this year before welcoming in Jared Diamond from the Wall Street Journal, who explains why the Padres bunt so much, why it might not work as well in the playoffs, and the interesting debate over who should be American League MVP this season.

After Jared leaves, Darren and John continue the debate over ABS before talking about the benefits of Thursday Night Football on Amazon and a big couple of days for San Diego FC.

  • PREVIEW: "There's nothing better than good vibes baseball."
    Sep 24 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro kick off the show by talking about self care and paying for someone else to trim your beard, plus a couple of stories about sneaking alcohol into sporting events.

The guys eventually get around to the San Diego Padres, who won their 4th consecutive game last night when Randy Vasquez twirled a gem against the Milwaukee Brewers. There are now paths for the Padres to potentially get some home playoff games next week, if not a path to them actually winning the NL West, and the guys get into the weeds about it (including who would be the team's starter in Game 1 of the NLDS).

Jimmy Kimmel returned to (some of) the airwaves last night and delivered one of the most-watched monologues in late night television history, so Darren and John discussed what they liked about it and if it will end up meaning anything in the long run.

Finally, the guys argue a bit over Major League Baseball installing the ABS ("automatic ball-strike system") system next year and talk about what fans can expect to change when they're watching on the couch.

  • PREVIEW: Padres clinch & Steve Sands previews the 2025 Ryder Cup
    Sep 23 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro kick off the show by talking about the San Diego Padres, who clinched a playoff berth last night with their best player at home with an illness. The guys highlight some very honest quotes from A.J. Preller and Mike Shildt that showed what a tough year this has been, despite winning enough to make it to the postseason.

After that, John jumps off and Steve Sands from NBC and The Golf Channel joins Darren to preview this weekend's Ryder Cup. The guys talk about what Steve will be doing, why the event is so unique, and whether USA team captain Keegan Bradley should've picked himself to be on the team.

  • Weekend Recap: Padres prepare the champagne
    Sep 22 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro recap the sports weekend, starting with the San Diego padres taking two-of-three from the Chicago White Sox to get within one game of clinching a playoff berth. The team still has some worrying weaknesses, but back-to-back playoff appearances has to be considered a success....so is A.J. Preller going to get an extension?

The guys move on to the 34-0 win for the San Diego State Aztecs football team over the Cal (Berkeley) Bears at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night. How impressive was it? And, now that Sean Lewis is back in control of the narrative, what can fans expect to see in the next game?

San Diego FC drew Atlanta United to a road draw, and some people were frustrated even more than disappointed. The guys talk about why SDFC is struggling to find a third scorer and what can be done in the few weeks between now and the start of the MLS Playoffs.

Finally, Darren found a quote from David Letterman about criticizing presidents on late night comedy shows and wanted to reflect on it after Jimmy Kimmel was removed from the air last week.

  • PREVIEW: What San Diego FC can learn from Atlanta United
    Sep 19 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro talk about three San Diego FC players being on the U-20 USMNT and what it means for the rest of the team's regular season schedule, including tomorrow in Atlanta, before talking about the Padres dropping further behind the Dodgers to make the final nine games of the season all but meaningless.

Then, the guys welcome on Rob Usry from Five Stripe Final to talk about Atlanta United as a model for MLS expansion and what has happened to the club since its fast start in 2017. Could San Diego FC be caught in the same trap of struggling to find success after coming hot out of the gates?

Afterwards, Darren and John talk about what Saturday night's game at Snapdragon Stadium between the San Diego State Aztecs and the California Bears could mean, both good and bad, before ending the week with a round of Try This!

    Sep 18 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro get together during the San Diego Padres game to talk about the uneven nature of the team right now before transitioning into a very long review of America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, a Netflix documentary about the Dallas Cowboys since Jerry Jones purchased the team.

After that, the guys spend some time talking about Jimmy Kimmel being taken off the air for making a joke and what it means for the future of free speech on broadcast TV and radio.

  • PREVIEW: Padres lineup concerns, SDFC wins the Baja Cup & mailbag questions!
    Sep 17 2025

Darren Smith and John Gennaro open up the podcast with a conversation about Michael King's poor start against the New York Mets and whether it's a harbinger of doom for the San Diego Padres' chances to go deep in the playoffs. The guys also talk a bit about the top of the lineup and how it could be affecting Fernando Tatis Jr.

They then open up the "mailbag", or at least dig through the #mailbag channel from the Section 1904 Discord server, and talk about the impending free agency of Michael King & Dylan Cease, career moves that were never made, who should replace Woods as the Seals' PA announce, and a lot more.

Finally, San Diego FC brought home the inaugural Baja Cup in what was a fantastic night for soccer in the area. However, there was some confusion over "guest players" that helped take down Club Tijuana and the guys attempt to make sense of it all.
