Established in 2018, Push x Pull has cemented itself in Portland’s specialty coffee scene as a roaster known for consistently offering some of the most unique coffees grown by incredibly innovative producers all over the world, and their café on Stark Ave was recently awarded a spot among the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops because of their relentless pursuit of quality and dedication to extraordinary hospitality.


    This conversation was a special look behind the scenes of Chris & Emma’s dynamic as a team, how they approach what they do at Push x Pull, and what they look forward to in the ever-changing coffee landscape.     Kyle O’Quin is a Grammy-Award winning musician, most known for his longtime role as a songwriter and keyboard player for the rock band Portugal. The Man. A wildly talented multi-instrumentalist, Kyle toured extensively with the band for years, playing thousands of shows in countries all over the world, and collaborating with some of the biggest names in music, including Mike D, Paul Williams, Danger Mouse, Jeff Bhasker, Mac Miller, and more.


    Having taken a big step back from touring with the band this year, Kyle has been diving head first into composing film scores for the past few months, and in this conversation we get into what that experience has been like and what has attracted him to the new challenge. We also dive into Kyle’s deep value for craft and excellence and how that played out for him growing up around the budding Seattle specialty coffee scene of the mid 2000s. He shares some perspective of life on the road in the early days with Gatsby’s American Dream and Portugal. The Man, why he eventually made the decision to get sober, his deep love for classical piano music, how he stays motivated to practice new skills, and everything in between.

    Matt Lounsbury is the President of Proud Mary Coffee USA, one of the most exciting and significant global specialty coffee brands to emerge in the past few decades. A longtime resident of Portland, OR, Matt has been an influential figure in the local food & beverage scene since the early 2000s - most known for his role as the VP of Stumptown Coffee Roasters up until 2017, where he helped the company go from a relatively small, well-loved local coffee roaster to one of the most recognizable and impactful coffee companies in the US, with landmark cafés in major cities all across the country. As the Global Head of Brand for Proud Mary, Matt continues to oversee the operations of PMC’s cafés and roasteries in Austin and Portland, and helps Proud Mary continue to cement themselves as one of the standout “gold-standards” for incredible hospitality and uncompromising excellence in coffee today.


    In this conversation, we explore Matt’s perspective as an early-onlooker into Portland in the early 2000s, how it has changed, his experience with Stumptown and the lessons he’s carried with him into the present, where specialty coffee is headed in the future, lessons learned through Proud Mary’s recent crowd-funding campaign, and even what inspires him as an artist and musician in his band (Hello Damascus), and so much more.

A fearless, passionate, and wildly creative force in the PDX community, Kelley has spent the last fifteen years doing exactly what she does best - hold space for artists and makers, and empower them to grow and succeed through collaborative environments that bring people together. In this conversation, Matthieu and Kelley get into the story arc of ADX, what Kelley’s own personal journey as an entrepreneur and creative has looked like along the way, and reflections on where society is headed and how we can affect positive change in our communities, among many other things.


    ADX functions as a large maker’s space where members get access to equipment and studios where they can practice their art alongside each other, motivating and inspiring new ideas and giving them the tools to do even more than they possibly could on their own.     Benjamin Paz is a renowned coffee producer in the Santa Barbara region of Honduras. Well known throughout the specialty coffee industry for growing the highest-quality coffees at his own farms, Benjamin also processes and exports much of the coffee in his region through the San Vincente Mill, and he has become one of the most influential coffee producers in the industry - winning the Cup of Excellence competition repeatedly in 2022 & 2024. He also works tirelessly to connect roasters to farmers throughout his region, helping establish relationships that have brought Santa Barbara to the forefront of the industry as a place that continually boasts some of the most amazing coffees year after year.


    Matt and Benjamin had the chance to sit down and chat during a rare quiet moment at Expo this year - chatting about the state of the industry and coffee trade today, catching up on what Benjamin is facing these days on his own farms, and reflecting on the changes that have occurred over the past few years in coffee. A really fun moment of connection during a busy weekend.
