This study is now recognized as a profound violation of medical ethics and a stark example of systemic racism in American healthcare. Its impact is still felt today in the mistrust many Black Americans have toward medical institutions.

As we explore this history, we’ll do our best to approach it with respect, and a focus on understanding what the experiment entailed and its consequences.
