  • S5E51 Dead and in Hell Part 8 (and Official Declaration 1)
    Dec 11 2025

    In this episode, Gerrit discusses the back and forth between Joseph Smith III and Joseph F. Smith (remember the F) on the topic of polygamy. The episode closes by setting the stage for the next installment of “Dead and in Hell,” as we return to Judge Brocchus, early Utah politics, and how one disastrously ill-judged conference speech helped light a fuse in territorial Utah.

  • S5E50 Dead and NOT in Hell, Alvin Smith
    Dec 4 2025

    In this episode, we discuss D&C Section 137 and the lessons found in D&C 137:5-7, specifically the faith shown by Joseph Smith regarding the eternal status of his brother Alvin.

    5 I saw Father Adam and Abraham; and my father and my mother; my brother Alvin, that has long since slept;

    6 And marveled how it was that he had obtained an inheritance in that kingdom, seeing that he had departed this life before the Lord had set his hand to gather Israel the second time, and had not been baptized for the remission of sins.

    7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God;

    Nov 29 2025

    In part three we talk about some of the differing accounts surrounding just how and when Joseph Smith died at Carthage, including the less-well known William Daniels account that claimed Joseph had been executed by a firing squad after he hit the ground.

Great faith filled discussions on early church history and the characters it involved. Controversial topics of LDS history are broken down, almost to a pulp (sarcasm of course (they’re extremely thorough)), to a point where new understanding really helped take away the mysticism, criticisms, and potential points of conflict involved in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Each episode Dr Dirkmaat gives a deluge of humour filled knowledge in a winding circuitous route that eventually ends at “the point”; and yet I’m more than happy to listen to the next one.

Amazingly in-depth Church History Discussions
