In this episode, I share a story about a short stint working directly in a Boston Public High School in partnership with a Community College. I highlight the significant moments that are referenced as flags, signals, and challenges when it comes to working in a school that does not center students or hold them accountable with a created culture of low expectations. This episode explores the time when I had the opportunity to visit and guest lecturer in East London, South Africa as a Fulbright at a high school for 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. THE CHAIR (S1/Ep65) — My Imaginary Graduation Speech

I am a 3 degree holder. I have my BA from Lake Forest College. I have my M.Ed from UCLA and I have my MBA from Babson College. I am also an educator who has sat through many variations of graduations over the years and there is a comfort to the speeches that are meant to inspire and connect students as they move on to the next stage of their life. I wrote a graduation speech that I wish I would have heard when I sat in those same chairs. Enjoy!

Lisa and I met at a school we both worked at. She worked on the first floor and I on the third. Our first conversation was in the teacher break room of the third floor and that is where our friendship began. I have learned so much and continue to learn from her and I am excited to share space with Lisa as she sits in THE CHAIR. Enjoy!

Lisa Graustein (she/her) M.Ed

Lisa is a Queer social justice teacher, facilitator, and artist. After 20 years as a middle and high school teacher and administrator, Lisa now trains teachers and works with non-profit leaders on how to interrupt and transform systemic oppression in schools and workplaces. She also works within her Quaker faith community across the US and Canada to end white supremacy and build support for reparations.
