  • 299. MONTHLY MEDICINE: September is Dissatisfaction
    Sep 1 2025

September isn't likely to be the month we want, but it is the one we need.

The theme for the month ahead is Dissatisfaction, not necessarily because it is an altogether negative or unacceptable cycle of time, it's just not necessarily tending to our larger desires and concerns. It is a piece of tape for a very large leak -- not ultimately the most ideal tool, but there is medicine in what it's offering.

Our job this month will be to:

    1. Work with and surrender to the Eclipses,

    2. Align ourselves with the nourishment of the cards we pulled in this reading, and:

    3. Remember that it is a 9/Hermit year. Ultimately completely dissatisfying, if we're seeking linearity, answers to our questions, and insight on what to do next. Slow, spiralic, soft, and ceremonial is the best way to move through this month ahead.

Our Soul Tarot Reading for September

Card for the month ahead: Three of Cups

How the month will feel to us: Four of Swords

How to best work with the energy of the month ahead: Seven of Swords

Medicine to call upon to work with this month: The Sun

Deepest lesson of the month ahead: Knight of Wands

What we’re being invited to pay attention to most: Five of Swords

Message from Spirit: Two of Cups

    Aug 15 2025

Wow, what a gift to share this conversation with the legendary Sanyu Estelle, aka The Word Witch! Sanyu is writing an incredible book called "The Cultural Origins of Tarot," and needs our help and support to truly be able to dive in and do the extent of research on it that the book deserves!

PS, if you're listening to this after the deadline to contribute to the campaign, no worries! There are other ways of sending support to Sanyu, and they are linked below in the show notes!

    About Sanyu:

Sanyu Estelle is a Soothsayer, artist and writer who has been published by The New York Times, Row House Publishing, and Red Wheel/Weiser. Her work revolves around the subjects of ontology, sociology, history, and criminology as she explores the intersection of culture, politics, and spirituality. With 11+ years as a professional reader and existential advisor, she is known for giving clients "the reading they need, not (necessarily) the reading they want."

Currently completing her first full-length book, "The Cultural Roots of Tarot" (Red Wheel/Weiser, Fall 2026), Sanyu examines the deck's multicultural origins through rigorous and groundbreaking historical research. Known as "The Word Witch" due to her profound love for etymology and philology, she combines 15+ years of Daoist practice and 10+ years in Ifa tradition with academic grounding to offer perspectives that honor ancestral wisdom, cosmic coherence and that challenge colonial narratives.

  • 294. MONTHLY MEDICINE: August is Catapult
    Jul 30 2025

Finally -- after what has felt like forever -- August gets things moving, flowing, and clicking again.

The theme of this month is Catapult for a reason. This isn't a chaotic, frantic, frightening launch into the void. We have been preparing for this for a long time, a time when we finally get some clarity, or are able to move the needle in some longed-for way. The "catapult" in question is a sacred, measured, and joyful collaboration with the muses, a serve and return that we've been waiting for.

The key for this month? To trust that you are actually ready to receive this. You're ready to move. You're ready to commit. You're more ready to move than you might believe. You have everything you need to do this.

Our Soul Tarot Reading for August

Card for the month ahead: Page of Swords

How the month will feel to us: Knight of Swords and The Sun

How to best work with the energy of the month ahead: The Devil

Deepest lesson of the month ahead: Page of Wands

What we’re being invited to pay attention to most: Justice

Message from Spirit — Four of Cups and The Magician

  • 293. MONTHLY MEDICINE: July is Asking for What You Need
    Jul 2 2025

The theme for this month is Asking for What You Need.

What is it that you need right now? How can you ask for it (to the degree that you're able to)?

July wants to remind you that even the willingness to connect with what we need and desire is a spell. Writing it, praying for it, feeling it, and communicating that longing is all part of the process of tuning in with those needs.

This is a watery, swirly, emotional month. It's going to bring us into some old stuff, some outdated debris -- once we face it, we can actually clear it and make way for something new.

It's not really going to feel like it in an acute sense, but this month really is building to something important -- it is preparing us for a time of change and necessarily evolution. Coming home to who we are and what we need in this season of life -- and asking for it -- is the big work that lies ahead for all of us this month.

Our Soul Tarot Reading for July

Card for the month ahead: King of Cups

How the month will feel to us: Ace of Wands

How to best work with the energy of the month ahead: Nine of Pentacles Rx

Deepest lesson of the month ahead: Six of Swords

Biggest helper for the month ahead: Page of Wands

What we’re being invited to pay attention to most: Nine of Swords Rx

  • 292. MONTHLY MEDICINE: June is Closure
    Jun 1 2025

June is a recalibration month of sorts.

It's not that we won't be moving, working, and showing up where we're called to, but there will be quite a bit of emphasis on slowing down, tuning in, reevaluating, and perhaps more importantly, digesting. We might not always enjoy or appreciate that pace of things, but it is of huge benefit to us to lean into it.

There's a lot to turn over and process before we can move forward into our next chapter. We need closure before we can move on, and that's precisely what June is helping us to take hold of.

Our Soul Tarot Reading for June

Card for the month ahead: Eight of Cups

How the month will feel to us: Ace of Wands and Four of Cups

How to best work with the energy of the month ahead: Page of Swords Rx and Four of Pentacles Rx

Deepest lesson of the month ahead: Queen of Wands

What we’re being invited to pay attention to most: Five of Swords

What do we personally need: Ten of Swords

Aligned action to take, if any: Ten of Pentacles Rx

What kind of support can we call upon for the month ahead: Five of Cups Rx
