  • Erin Patterson’s Bleak Prison Life Exposed at Plea Hearing | Mushroom Murder Trial
    Aug 26 2025

Welcome back to the Mushroom Murder Trial podcast. I’m Lisa, reporting from Melbourne.

Yesterday in the Supreme Court of Victoria, we heard confronting details about Erin Patterson’s grim prison reality. Locked in isolation for 23 hours a day at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, her only potential conversation comes through a mesh fence with convicted terrorist and killer, Momena Shoma.

During the plea hearing, Patterson faced the families of her victims, including survivor Pastor Ian Wilkinson. Prosecutor Jane Warren urged the court to impose life without parole, describing the crimes as “so horrific, so cruel and so callous” that mercy should not apply.

The hearing also revealed Patterson’s struggles behind bars — from her isolation conditions to her limited comforts — while her victims’ families continue to live with the devastating consequences of her crimes.

The sentencing has now been adjourned for two weeks. Stay tuned as we follow every detail of this landmark case.

  • Erin Patterson Faces Sentencing: Forgiveness, Grief, and Broken Families
    Aug 25 2025

In this episode of The Mushroom Murder Trial Podcast, we take you inside the Supreme Court of Victoria as Erin Patterson faces sentencing for the fatal mushroom meal that shocked Australia. Survivors and grieving families delivered powerful victim impact statements, though most will remain private.

Pastor Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor, told the court he forgives Patterson — but also condemned her “callous and calculated disregard” for life. He paid moving tribute to his late wife Heather, while Don and Gail Patterson’s daughter and nephew described their ongoing nightmare. Erin’s estranged husband Simon Patterson also spoke, reflecting on grief, broken family ties, and relentless media intrusion.

I was in the courtroom as Patterson was led in under guard — a stark reminder of how far this case has come from the first whispers in a Facebook true crime group to today’s packed courtroom.

  • Mushroom Murder Trial: Erin Patterson to Face Her Victims at Plea Hearing
    Aug 21 2025

Next week, the convicted mushroom killer will be forced to sit through a two-day plea hearing as the families of her victims deliver powerful impact statements. Will Erin Patterson meet their gaze, or will she retreat behind tissues and her belief that she’s the true victim in all this?

We’ll look at what’s ahead in court: how Simon Patterson may confront his estranged wife, Erin.

Plus the dignity shown so far by the Patterson and Wilkinson families, and whether Erin will risk a glare or a breakdown. We’ll also compare this approach to some of the most striking victim impact statements from other notorious cases—including the blistering words delivered to Bryan Kohberger by Kaylee Goncalves’ sister.

The sentencing hearing is about a month after a jury found Erin guilty of three murders and one attempted murder for her infamous beef Wellington lunch. With life in prison on the table—and whispers of an appeal already circling—this could be one of the most emotional chapters yet in Australia’s most gripping true crime case.

Thank you so much for listening. I have a few thank you's, firstly to the wonderful listeners on Reddit, especially the one who said I was like a nosy neighbour - that is exactly how I like to be perceived. Because I know Erin a bit, but I can talk over the back fence about this for hours.

  • Erin Patterson: The Hospital Meeting That Changed Everything | Mushroom Murders
    Aug 9 2025

August 2, 2023. While Erin Patterson was dumping a food dehydrator at the Leongatha tip, her lunch guests lay critically ill in hospital.

Inside the Austin Hospital chapel, Simon Patterson called a family meeting that would alter the course of the entire case. His cousin, Ruth du Bois, remembers the moment he revealed a chilling truth — he believed Erin had deliberately made him sick in the past, and had stopped eating her food.

The next day, Simon shared his medical records with relatives. Four days later, the Wilkinson family went to police, triggering a major investigation into poisons like ricin and hemlock.

They would never work out exactly what had happened to Simon.
