Saint Augustine teaches us lessons of humility, perseverance, and the transformative power of grace. Despite his early years spent in sensual pursuits and intellectual pride, his restless heart yearned for truth. His mother’s unwavering prayers and his own searching spirit ultimately led him to surrender in humility to God’s call. In his moment of conversion, Augustine’s story reminds us that no soul is beyond redemption and that true wisdom begins in humility before God.

This series contains moments of intensity and fear. Augustine struggles with his passionate nature and against carnal pleasures. He is depicted in a non-Christian relationship, with their child. A gladiator fight can be overheard. Voices are raised in argument. A character dies of illness. A boy is separated from his mother. A government persecution of the church is portrayed.

Augustus Tolton is a model of perseverance and fortitude. He suffers through prejudice, poverty, and repeated rejection, but he never abandons his faith. Through it all, he pursues his vocational calling to the priesthood. He is charitable and compassionate to all he meets, offering a friendly ear to anyone who needs it.

This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. A brief scene depicts young Augustus and his mother fleeing slavery, pursued by men with guns and hounds. Augustus endures racism and racial injustice, including multiple rejections from seminaries, a mentor’s collapse into alcoholism, and his own spiritual despair. He works in degrading conditions at a saloon and a factory. Characters argue over justice, and a priest is found unconscious from drinking.
