  • 2/28 South Dakota Weather: Winter Weather Advisory
    Feb 28 2026
Good morning. Maine. I'm DJ Huzz. A cold front ripped through overnight and split this state clean in half. Western South Dakota woke up to sunshine and 50-degree warmth. Eastern South Dakota? You got the raw end of the deal. Overcast skies, a stubborn snow band. and 2 to 3 inches piling up across Brookings County. In the next 24 hours. Here's what happened. That front dragged Canadian air south. and a compact disturbance riding the northwest flow is wringing out moisture across the northeast corner. The snow tapers off by mid-afternoon, but a Winter Weather Advisory stays in effect until 3 P.M. For Brookings and surrounding areas. If you're traveling Highway 14, take it slow. Roads are slick. Now the temperature story. Out west, you're climbing to 50 degrees under blue skies, with gusts punching up to 35 miles an hour. Central South Dakota hits 39. Eastern areas stay locked in the mid-30s where clouds hang tough. Tonight, the bottom drops out hard. Lows crash to 8 degrees in the east, 11 central, 19 west. Wind chills will flirt with zero by sunrise. Sunday brings a brief cooldown. Highs only reach 29 east, 37 central, 47 west. but that Arctic high slides east fast. Next week looks like spring showed up early. Monday warms into the 40s and 50s statewide with a chance of rain or snow. By Thursday, eastern South Dakota could hit 63 degrees. Western areas push 60. We're gaining nearly 3 minutes of daylight each day now. The spring equinox is just 20 days out. If you're in the snow band today. and enjoy that sunshine out west while you've got it. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast as confidence improves. Stay safe, stay prepared. and enjoy the day.

  • Snow Starting 7 AM | South Dakota Weather
    Feb 25 2026
Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the South Dakota Weather Podcast — it's Wednesday, February 25th. You're sitting at 16 degrees right now.. And the state's about to split three ways. **Eastern South Dakota, you've got the messy afternoon ahead.** Snow rolls in by noon and sticks around until 7 P.M. The heaviest stuff hits around 4 P.M., right when you're thinking about heading home. Most spots see less than an inch, but watch for those narrow bands from Chamberlain to Parker — they could drop 2 to 3 inches. Visibility tanks fast when it's coming down. You'll climb from 18 degrees at 6 A.M. to 34 by 3 P.M. Winds flip from northeast to southeast around 1 P.M. **Western South Dakota, you dodge the worst of it.** Quick rain and snow mix around 5 A.M., then partly sunny skies take over. You warm up beautifully — 51 degrees by 4 P.M. before cooling to 31 overnight. Winds gust to 18 miles an hour around 2 P.M. Not a bad day out west. **Central South Dakota, you're somewhere in between.** Snow hits between 7 and 9 A.M., peaking around 8 A.M. with less than half an inch. Lows drop to 22 around 5 A.M., feeling like 13 degrees with the wind. Then you jump to 41 by 3 P.M. Tonight, eastern areas could see another light snow round before 8 P.M. Lows drop to the low 20s statewide. **Looking ahead:** Thursday brings sunshine and serious warming — 50s across the board with breezy west winds gusting to 32 miles an hour. Friday hits 60 degrees and feels like spring. Then reality crashes back in. That Arctic front arrives Friday night with snow and a temperature nosedive — back to the 20s and 30s for the weekend. Drive slow if you're in the east this afternoon. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
