  • The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song Twenty - Neil from Arroyo Grande
    Jun 2 2025
The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 20 — Neil from Arroyo GrandeHey, it’s jD, and this week I’m joined by a die-hard hockey fan and Hip convert who hails from California. Meet Neil from Arroyo Grande, the west coast wizard of late-night YouTube rabbit holes and deep-cut reverence.Neil didn’t grow up with The Hip in his backyard. He had to find them — through hockey, through Trailer Park Boys, through a fascination with Canadian culture that led him down a road paved with Gretzky, Jericho, and yes… Gord.We talk about getting into the band via Yer Favourites, chasing context across albums and eras, and how discovering The Hip opened the door to new perspectives on art, identity, and memory. He shares what it’s like being an American Hip fan (“Wait, they’re not on the radio here?”), and how Phantom Power, Man Machine Poem, and some Gordon Edgar Downie solo magic helped him through hard times — and made the music his own. From WWE finishers to vapor trails to songs that hit like Shakespearean tragedy, this one’s for the late bloomers, the lyric heads, and anyone who ever found themselves singing along to a song they didn’t fully understand… until they really did.🎙️ Next week: We’ll be joined by Jeff from Belleville — a 31-show veteran and one of our most compelling guests to date. From basement bars to backstage chats and a full-blown English Lit take on Hip lyrics, Jeff brings a hell of a lot to the table. You won’t wanna miss it.💬 Pull Quote“When I first heard Machine, I was walking to class, looking up at the stars — and I knew I’d never forget that moment. It was like the song was part of the sky.”👤 About Our GuestNeil from Arroyo Grande lives on California’s Central Coast, right near Pismo Beach — Bugs Bunny’s wrong turn and his own right one. A lifelong wrestling fan, hockey nerd, and Hip evangelist, Neil has gone deep into the catalogue (yes, all 13 studio albums and Gord’s solo work) and emerged as a true member of the flock. He’s also a father, a husband, and a proud Hip missionary — spreading the good word through mixtapes, lectures, and unsolicited YouTube links. • Sunday Evening Jam - Live Stream May 25th
    May 30 2025

🎙️ Last Sunday on the Sunday Evening Jam…

    We got into it.

Me and Sara J were joined by two bonafide membersHIP legends — Jeff Tucker and Michael Hassey — and we covered everything from countdown gossip to Gord’s lyrics to cottage-core Hip anthems that make long weekends feellike long weekends.

We unpacked where the countdown’s at, argued about what’s still missing (hi, Opiated), and took a bit of a detour into Gord’s wordplay — his way of saying ten things at once without ever blinking.

Then we closed out with stories.

Campgrounds. Canoes. Cheap beer. Gift Shop at dusk.

The Hip was there for all of it — painting the backdrop in real time while we tried to figure out who we were.

    Missed it?

The replay’s up now on YouTube.

  • The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Round Table #2 - Live Stream
    May 28 2025

The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Round Table Two

    Songs #40–21 | Live Streamed May 23, 2025

Every ten songs, we hit pause on the countdown and bring the community to the mic. This is Round Table Two — a live-streamed, unfiltered, and occasionally unhinged group chat about all things Tragically Hip. In this installment, we turn our attention to the middle meat of the countdown: songs ranked #40 through #21, where the debates get louder, the takes get spicier, and the stakes feel weirdly personal.

I’m your host, jD, joined by four of the most thoughtful and opinionated Hip fans I know: Chris Sinclair, Jeff Schnurr, Craig Rogers, and Sara J. Together, we dissect the placements, praise the sleepers, question the darlings, and throw a few punches (with love) at the songs we think missed their mark.

Here’s what you can expect inside this episode:

    • Jeff from Vaughan can’t believe We Want to Be It and You’re Not the Ocean made it this far — especially when Don’t Wake Daddy is chilling down at #41. He’s got opinions, and he’s not afraid to name names.
    • Sara J celebrates the perfection of matchups — how the right guests landed the right songs in uncanny fashion — and gives a heartfelt shoutout to Sherry and her beautiful number symphony around Long Time Running.
    • Craig from Vancouver argues he’d flip the entire list upside down if he could, with Three Pistols and We Want to Be It trading places. He also reflects on how playing in a tribute band changes how you hear — and feel — a song.
    • Chris from Guelph shares his emotional milestone: the moment Saturday Night Live introduced him to The Hip and forever changed the trajectory of his fandom. He also lists five songs in this range he’d swap out for deep cuts like Dire Wolf, Opiated, and Morning Moon.
    • We talk bridges (and how Bobcaygeon might have the greatest one of all time), overplayed classics (Boots or Hearts vs. Grace, Too), and bold predictions for what’s still to come.
    • And me? I mostly try to wrangle the chaos, play devil’s advocate, and float the idea that no one will be able to predict the Top 5 in the right order — not even me, and I’ve seen the data.

This is not your average podcast episode. It’s a jam session. A group therapy night. A barstool conversation happening in real time. And like all good round tables, it ends in laughter, hot takes, side quests, and one bold prediction from every guest.

Here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the quotes you’ll hear:

🗣️ “Pigeon Camera used to be my #1 — now it’s in the 20s. That’s how this band works. Your list evolves as you do.” – Craig

🗣️ “Boots or Hearts is a dance floor packer. But it’s not in my Top 40. At all.” – Jeff

🗣️ “I think Ahead by a Century will be #1. I don’t love that it will be — but I understand why it might.” – Sara

🗣️ “The Hip write better bridges than most bands write choruses.” – Craig

🔥 This is Round Table Two.

🔊 Stream it now wherever you get your podcasts.

🎥 Or catch the replay on YouTube via @Dewvre1974.

🎟️ And remember: it all leads to the live finale on October 4A Celebration of The Hip for ALS. Tickets at dewvre.com/tthtop40.

The countdown continues. The debates don’t stop. And the passion? Still off the charts.
