The last of five “sacred doors” in Rome and at the Vatican will be closed on January 6, 2026. Around 30 million Catholics have made a pilgrimage there in 2025, proclaimed by Pope Francis to be a special “year of Jubilee.” By walking through those doors, pilgrims hoped to earn indulgences facilitating an escape from the suffering of Purgatory, either for them or their deceased loved ones. Is this religious tradition a glorious opportunity or spiritual exploitation? Are they doors of blessings or doors of deception?
