What Is the Content of Our Character?
Dr. King once dreamed of a world where his children would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
Scripture gives us a measure of what that looks like:
“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” — Proverbs 11:3
So we pause and ask ourselves some honest questions.
What does God see when God looks at our character—
our integrity, our consistency, our faithfulness on both our good days and our bad?
What do our friends and neighbors see in us?
Do they see lives guided by empathy, understanding, and service?
What do strangers see when they cross our path?
Do they encounter compassion, kindness, and generosity?
And even harder—what do our enemies see?
Do they see anger, fear, and bitterness,
or a character so grounded in love
that it refuses to hate or return harm for harm?
Dear God,
may our character be so rooted in truth and love
that no matter who is looking,
they see something that points beyond us—
toward a world shaped by mercy, justice, wellbeing for all,
to the beloved community.
