  • 157. The Battle of Castle Itter
    Aug 25 2025

The Battle of Castle Itter has to be one of the weirdest battle of the Second World War, it's the SS against Wermacht, the Austrian Resistance, US troops, an SS officer, some politicians, a famous tennis player and Charles de Gaulle's sister....in the Alps

  • 156. Amon Göth - The Butcher of Płaszów
    Aug 19 2025

Amon Leopold Göth was an SS Schutzstafeeln, the commandant of the Płaszów labour camp in Kraków, Poland and a man that was such a monster that Steven Spielberg had to tone down his cruelty in Schindler's List because he didn't want audiences to think that it was exaggerating or making things up.

  • 155. Ravensbrück Concentration Camp
    Aug 11 2025

Ravensbrück was the only major Nazi concentration camp for women, located just miles north of Berlin, it was close enough to hand, but far enough to avoid too many questions. A place of brutality, where women were used as forced labour for Siemens and Heinkel, to build rockets and luftwaffe machinery. To provide products for businesses owned by prominent SS, and to make uniforms for the soldiers. But it wasn't all work, women were used for horrific "scientific" experiments, tortured and more...

As a history person myself I love listening to Katie. Her informal style and reflections on what happened keep the stories from getting bogged down in facts and allows the events and people to shine in the retelling. Occasionally, she'll leave me wanting more information, for example she might state that a person was cruel without giving examples, and I'll think: but how Katie? Did he beat his wife? Was he oppressive to his tenants?etc. But I also realize she only has so much time to tell a story and some details may need to be left out. If I'm still sufficiently curious when she finishes her story I'll look up more information myself.

I also suffer terrible insomnia and listen to Katie as I lie in bed. The stories distract me from the pain that keeps me awake and sometimes even help me fall asleep.

Love listening to Katie
