  • Clayful: give every kid someone to talk to ft. Maria Barrera
    Apr 10 2023

Accelerated by a global pandemic, youth are experiencing a mental health crisis unlike anything we've seen before.

    • There aren't enough clinical providers. For every 1,200 students there's only one school psychologist.
    • Lack of providers makes support inaccessible. Costs are high and waitlists are as long as 4-6 months
    • Support is reactive rather than proactive. Students don't get help until they reach a breaking point
    • Educators are burnt out. There's not enough support & educators are feeling the burden

Clayful provides coaching for every student - when & where they need it. We chat with founder Maria Barrera about:

    • Maria's experiences as an immigrant from Colombia
    • What it takes to get schools admin, teachers, counselors, parents, and students onboard
    • The financial incentives that make it possible for schools to provide Clayful
    • The importance of providing support, not advice - and the inspiration behind this intention
    • How to measure success and what to optimize for - "We want to reach more kids - but we also want to build their own capacity to coach themselves. If we design for daily use, does that mean we become a crutch? How do you define value? If one session changes a kid's life, is that enough?"

    About Maria
Maria ran her first coaching session when she was 15.

Then as a tutor, and now as founder of Clayful, Maria has always found joy in coaching others through everyday life stressors and challenges. This led her to start a tutoring company while getting her engineering degrees at Stanford University, to leading growth, product, and marketing at edtech leader Nearpod, and to being a part of the early team at HR-focused, a16z-backed, ChartHop.

Now, she is building Clayful to be the support she wished she had had (and that would have saved her lots in therapy bills!). With Clayful, kids have access to personalized resources that improve their mental wellness, regardless of socio-economic status.

  • Sharing what you love despite discouragement & setbacks ft. Sharon Lee
    Mar 26 2023

Posting online is scary - especially when you come in with preconceived notions of what it means to gather a following and to put work into that. We spoke with Sharon Lee, a TikToker best known for her LA recs, loving advice from her dad, and hot takes on media, about her journey into TikTok - how she hated (and still hates) influencer culture, how she positions herself to make this endeavor meaningful, and how she even deals with negative feedback from judgmental friends and getting canceled.

    Part 2 coming next week!

  • Our fears about trying new things
    Mar 5 2023

Previously on the podcast, Erica came onto the podcast to chat about how we can all level up our lives with side quests. As we dug a little deeper in our questions, at one point Erica shares that it gets into her life philosophy of believing the journey is more important than the destination (it’s even her go-to second date question). But what if you’re more like us and have habitually cared about the destination, but still crave the ability to feel freedom/agency to start a new hobby? We’ll share our perspectives as trained main questers and some of the mistakes we’ve learned as we’ve embarked on new hobbies and side quests.

Here's your Valentine's Day watch, PINK LIE, a show that's equal parts spicy and sincere, and we're so excited to dive deep into our review and reflections with our good friend and former guest, Vanuyen Pham.

  • Dear b&g: My biggest insecurity in friendship
    Feb 3 2023

Last week, Da Eun asked for Sophia's advice regarding the workplace. Today is Sophia's turn to ask for Da Eun's advice.

TODAY'S TOPIC: I notice that overall, you’re very proactive in maintaining friendships and making new friends. For example, there are many times when a friend from hs reacehs out and you make time to catch up. Also, when you see someone interesting on LinkedIn, you’re great at reaching out and following through on scheduling time to get to know each other. I want to be like you, but I think some barriers for me are:

    1. I’m scared to be tired when the time of the scheduled call/meetup comes around: I feel like my energy level is unpredictable, and I really dislike the feeling of being tired but having to muster up the energy to meet someone, EVEN IF I end up following through and enjoying the conversation.
    2. I know I over-value spontaneity yet that knowledge isn’t enough to push me to catch up with people: I like the feeling of keeping my evenings free to be spontaneous…even though I’ve learned again and again that once I go out and see people, I end up being really happy I did.
    3. Deep down, I’m afraid I’ve become a less interesting person. It’s hard to re-find that energy and desire to meet up with people, when I wonder what how people's perceptions of me will change upon meeting up.

Do you have any tips on navigating these particular barriers?

  • Dear b&g: I never feel like I’m doing a good job at work
    Jan 27 2023

Da Eun: We’ve been friends for almost a decade now, hard to believe, but we always have so much to learn from each other given our expertise, our lived experiences, and the synergy that is our friendship. Today, I need your advice, Sophia.

Sophia: And I’ll need your advice, Da Eun, in the next episode. Hopefully, people can gain some more insight into the vulnerable aspects of our friendship, and also hear our personal thought processes when it comes to supporting our loved ones.

TODAY'S TOPIC: Dear bamboo & glass, at work, I lack a lot of confidence and catch myself having incredibly invasive self-talk. I tell myself “oh my goodness, everyone thinks I’m a fraud and I am not capable. They’re just tolerating me at this point.” “how I could I be so dumb? There’s no way I can keep up.” I’m tired of how that can ruin my day and week so easily, and I know that it’s the meaning that I put behind these incidents that give it so much power. How can I get rid of this self-talk, especially when I am prone to believe it’s over 60% true?

  • What really goes into a dream career ft. Karen Mok & Serena Lee Kim
    Jan 19 2023

"A professional change in midlife can provide a much-needed reset—at least when you’re looking for a career that more closely aligns with your passion. But finding what you love, especially once you’ve gone down an entirely different path, can feel impossible."

On bamboo & glass, we talk about the abundant possibilities of who we can choose to be, and one pillar we discuss is career. We all know the career jump is challenging. It’s oftentimes where most of us get stuck: the fear of pursuing our dreams or stepping outside of our comfort zone. But what we don’t talk as much about are the questions and sobering realizations we continue to have months, even years into the new venture, and how we relate that back to our “old selves.” We'll hear two past guests, Karen Mok and Serena Lee Kim, share their meandering journeys of wandering through career, unpacking success and passion alongside reinventing and redefining their identities.
