    Dr. Adrienne Benediktsson is an Associate Professor of Biology at Mount Royal University in Calgary and a dedicated neuroscientist specializing in the study of brain cells called astrocytes. Diagnosed with bipolar I disorder during her graduate studies, Adrienne has spent nearly two decades blending her lived experience with rigorous scientific research. Her work aims to deepen understanding of bipolar disorder’s biology while breaking down stigma. Passionate about community support, she actively engages in peer advocacy and is committed to fostering acceptance and hope for others living with bipolar disorder.

    Shaley Hoogendoorn is a speaker, content creator and currently hosts the popular “this is bipolar” vlog and podcast. She lives with bipolar 2 disorder and shares her story and the stories of others to dismantle the stigma around mental illness. Shaley is passionate about educating and empowering others about bipolar disorder. She has contributed to publications for Sanctuary Ministries, Psych Central and BP Hope magazine. She hosted a series interviewing women living with mental illnesses at SheLoves Magazine in a series named "Sisters in Mental Illness." Shaley’s greatest hope is that creating safe spaces to connect will give hope and comfort those that struggle. Robert Villanueva is an international mental health advocate, speaker and mentor in arena of lived experience of bipolar disorder. His advocacy journey began over 25 years ago when he received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Robert collaborates with researchers, academics, and policymakers both in the United States and globally, providing insights drawn from his own journey and representing the often-overlooked voices of the “ordinary” population. He currently chairs the lived experience advisory board for the “Healthy Lifestyles with Bipolar Disorder” research study at the University of California, Berkeley.
