The Fen country in the autumn of 1850 is dank and drab. Catherine Greencliffe comes from the other end of England to care for a small child who has been abandoned by his mother. On the surface all seems well, but she soon becomes prey to mysterious compulsions and visions. She comes to realize that Southwell Hall holds a secret that she is not invited to share and, at last, makes a dreadful discovery.

Captivated first by her, and then her harrowing story of murder and ghostly revenge, he joins her in unearthing the secrets of her past. Sheila is a young wife new to Manhattan when the Twin Towers come down, apparently taking her husband with them. And yet she insists that he is not dead, only missing.
