Jelalu-'d-Din, today know simply as Rumi, was the greatest mystical poet of the golden age of classical Persian literature. In later years, he renounced the world and founded a famous order of Dervishes called the Maulavis. He was born at Balkh in 1207, and died in Konya in 1273.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is perhaps the most well known collection of reminiscences. Though it covers less than a decade, it offers a lively and detailed insight into a period and a personality, for he noted events in both public and private life. Famous passages include descriptions of The Plague and the Great Fire of London.

This remarkable poem, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I, was Spenser's finest achievement: the first epic poem in modern English. The Faerie Queene combines dramatic narratives of chivalrous adventure with exquisite and picturesque episodes of pageantry. At the same time, Spenser is expounding a deeply-felt allegory of the eternal struggle between Truth and Error.
