The Princess and the Pea is the story of a prince who wishes to marry a princess but is having difficulty finding a suitable wife. One night a young woman who claims to be a princess arrives at the palace, so the prince's mother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea under her bed, covered by 20 feather mattresses. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she had a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard in the bed. So the two are married because only a real princess would be sensitive enough to feel a pea through so much bedding.

Before going to bed, he cuts out the last pieces of leather so that he can sew them into a pair of shoes the next day. Three elves come in the night and make the pair of shoes which he sells for more than his asking price the next day.

Frank Richard Stockton (1834-1902) was an author and humorist, best known for a series of fairy tales that were hugely popular during the latter part of the 19th century. Stockton avoided the moralizing common to children's stories of the time, and instead humorously poked fun at the abuse of power, greed, violence, and a host of other human flaws. A griffin (a beast that is a combination of eagle and lion) comes to a town that has his likeness above the church door. Having never seen himself, the griffin becomes entranced with the statue, but his presence frightens the villagers....

Leo Tolstoy (1828 - 1910) was a Russian writer who is regarded as among the greatest authors of all time. Translated by R S Townsend and published in 1916, the seven stories in Tolstoy for the Young have been adapted for children, to serve as the perfect introduction to the great writer for young listeners.

"The Happy Prince" is a short story by Oscar Wilde, about a swallow and a statue. The swallow who remained behind when his flock flew to Africa for the winter, befriends a golden and bejewelled statue of a prince. Witnessing the poverty and suffering in the city, the statue asks the swallow to take his jewels and use them to help the poor. One by the swallow takes the gemstones, and ultimately also the gold plating, stripping the statue bare. But because it waited so long, it succumbs to the cold of winter.

American Indian Fairytales is a collection of Native American folklore retold for children and young adults. Margaret Compton (1852-1903) drew on authentic lore from a wide selection of regions.
