Già la presentazione iniziale, secca e lapidaria, degli Steve, i "filosofi", e del loro "antro", è sufficiente a rendere inevitabile il crimine. Il giallo si preannuncia subito come il dramma del fanatismo e delle sue conseguenze fatali.Sono quattro gli Steve, cultori teorici e pratici di scienze morali, vivono monacalmente in una squallida villetta di periferia, l'antro dei filosofi.
