Black and Miri just want some alone time. Instead, they get thrown into a high-profile murder case when one of Miri's patients shows up dead. When the body is found, beheaded and tied to a pier, Los Angeles detectives descend on San Francisco, convinced it's the serial killer they've been hunting, known only by his media name of "the Templar". When the Templar continues to cut a swath through San Francisco, his victims begin to show a new pattern, however - a pattern that appears to have Miri at its center.

It's 1955 and ex-cop Tommy Smith is working as a crime writer for the only daily black newspaper in America when his boss, a prominent publisher with a politically complex past, turns up murdered, a group of corrupt white cops takes the opportunity to make sure Smith is prime suspect. To clear his name, Smith will need to enlist the help of his old boss, the resilient Sergeant McInnis - who has logged seven difficult years as the only white cop in a black precinct.

It's 2032 and we live in the worst cyberpunk future. Kiera is gigging her ass off to keep the lights on, but her polycule's social score is so dismal they're about to lose their crib. That's why she's out here chasing cheaters with Angel Herrera, a luddite P. I. who thinks this is The Big Sleep. Then the latest job cuts too deep-hired to locate Herrera's ex-best friend (who's also Kiera's pro bono attorney), they find him murdered instead. Their only lead: a stick of Nag Champa incense dropped at the scene.
