Die Erzählung "Die Abenteuer einer Silvesternacht" sind im letzten Band der Reihe "Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier" erschienen. Sie handelt von einem reiselustigen Mann, der sich zuerst seiner ehemaligen Geliebten wieder annähern möchte. Im zweiten Kapitel geht er in ein Kellerlokal. Hier trifft er auf Peter Schlemihl, der seinen Schatten verloren hat. Anschließend, im dritten Kapitel, begegnet er Erasmus Spikher, der kein Spiegelbild mehr hat. Im abschließenden vierten Kapitel wird dann die "Geschichte vom verlorenen Spiegelbilde" erzählt.

È un racconto complesso che affronta innanzitutto il tema dell'ambiguità e, tratto tipicamente romantico, indaga l'immaginario dell'automa. Tra le opere più angosciose di Hoffmann, "L'uomo della sabbia" descrive con tocchi magistrali la regressione psicologica che riporta in vita gli incubi infantili del protagonista, inoltrandosi negli aspetti più reconditi e contorti della psiche umana e nelle manifestazioni oniriche dell’inconscio.
